sanjay overburn

i went thru 9 250wXM10k bulbs trying to get all 3 the same color... most were yellowish... i was able to get 2 whiter and finally the 3rd... the one of the original white ones went yellow and i gave up

i have seen others with really nice, white xm10ks.... sanj's data says they are around 10-11kish.... but there seems to be some lack in consistency.... or maybe i was just unlukcy enough to be trying them out when a bad lot came out :(

I'm pretty sure mine wasn't my water. I run a Aqua UV 25w and run Seachem's Black Diamond carbon to keep my water as clear as I can.

Dunno, maybe I got one of the ones like kip got.

I am more inclined to believe JB NY, he's been around a long time and has an amazing set up.

Definately seen more days in this hobby than me.

I've heard that rotating the nipple position whille the bulb is lit will help the color whiten up. I don't know how well it works but there is a guy on here that swears by it. I've tried doing it but it's way too hot to handle.

Sparkss,

How do you like the look and growth on the 400 watt BLVs? Do you need actinics to blue it up a bit? I made a mistake and purchased the XM 15k and the par on them is not very good (E Ballast XMs are 75 and the BLVs are 140) though the color is very nice. What are your thoughts and where did you purchase them from?

We are very happy with our change. They were noticeably bluer when we first got them, but they have burnt in to a more white look (or we just got used to them and don't notice the blue any more :)). They still bring out the POP in our challices and zoas, so we are quite happy with them, without needing additional actinics, but I can easily see others feeling the need to add more blue to them to get the typical "midnight blue" look that seems to be popular on tanks these days :). Their rated CCt is 13.6K, and their plots have some nice spikes in the 450 NM range, give or take, if I recall.

HTH :)

The nipple (called the exhaust tube) should be at the 3, 9 or 12 o'clock position. Sometimes moving it from the side position to the top position or vise-versa will make a slight change in color. Many times it doesn't, but if the lamp doesn't look like you think it should, try moving the lamp a little and see if that fixes it.
