applying a few coats of an amber shellac to the lighter pieces may bridge that gap while mellowing the contrast a bit. then follow up with a varnish top coat if you wish..

So here's a thought on the stand and canopy with a two-tone look. Since the rest of my basement is trimmed out in a golden oak, would it make sense to stain the raw wood on the door panels to match that? Here's a shot showing where the stand meets the golden oak trim to get an idea of the contrast. Would it be too ugly looking or not? I'm just worried about getting too many wood shades going on down in the basement is all. Let me know what you all think.

I vote for staining the remaining trim the same color as the stand/canopy, but i'm not a fan of two-tone in general.

it does not look very good now like it is. now seeing the trim on the ground, eather match it or go with the dark you have on the stand.

It looks like "the third time is a charm". Nice progress on the build. I vote for staining the remaining raw wood the same color as your stand and canopy. The two tone look can get old quick, but a classic look will remain well.....classic.

I tend to agree with that! I've done enough re-finishing work that I really don't want to do this twice when I get sick of it. I'm going to keep it the one color! Thanks everyone for the feedback!

Hey Sara,

Glad to see you are almost there! I wish I could come down to help do the rock work this time.

As far as the varnish question goes my vote is to make the trim and stand the same color. A wise designer told me once that you never put more than three different colors of wood in the same room. I don't know if that still holds true but I am very familiar with your basement and I think that the overall look will be better with matching varnish on the tank woodwork.

Even though I saw Benjii's drawings I didn't realize exactly what you were getting into till I saw the pictures of the plumbing. Although after seeing his system I should have realized. Holy Cr@p! That is more that I want to think about after using up all my (limited) brain power at work.

I love that Nemo light it reminds of when you got electricuted when we wired the power. The look on your face was priceless... :hmm4: :bigeyes:

Oh yes, it was priceless alright! As I'm holding on to the light bulbs to stabilize them, my husband on the other side of the wall decides to power the fish up. I completely got shocked as Lisa is standing next to me. She giggles and say's to me, "oh, you don't like electricity do you"?

This was not the beginning of my fear of plugging and unplugging items, it just reinforced my overall fear of electrocution!


Oh, and my stand and canopy are now one solid color!

Oh that sucks! I used to work on cars and high end audio systems and have taken more than my fair share of voltage. Needless to say i'm a little jumpy around DC voltage. :lol:

After 6.5 days of making water, I have about 1/4" to go before it starts to run over into the external overflow box.

The closed loop is running with no issues!

I'll upload more system photo's later for you plumbing junkies!

It's overflowing now into the overflow box

As promised, he's a few more shots of the plumbing work:

Here's the return pump/return piping. I used the garden hose for my waterchanges. I just attach a separate garden hose to it and run it over to my sump pump area and drain.
