Sarcophyton worries

A few months ago my large (about 5" dia) green Sarcophyton started developing holes around the top of the stem. I was told this was natural and the top was getting ready to break off - I was going to be a father.

Well the holes got larger and larger (about 1/2 inch) and finally one hole split to the outter edge and connected to the next hole.

During this time the green Polyps stopped showing all the time (my clowns got very frustrated). I was told this is normal.

Finally at least a month ago the polyps stopped all the time, and it's just sat there. There is some browish algae growing on it -I got it out and it doesn't smell but it looks like an old hunk of leather sitting there doing nothing.

Ideas? Thoughts? Things to check? My params are good, I've got other things growning to the point of me wanting to get rid of some items (colt corals I can't give away fast enough and my pulsating zena is next).

Thanks

got any pics? could be an infection. or its splitting. if its the former. you can cut away all the infected areas and it will save your toadstool. (im guessing green polyped one aka tyree)

OK, things are different - the last few days the green polyps are back. The skin is looking better -I've got big chunks hanging off /w polyps (frags). Boy is this thing tough.

Thanks
