And another PS: My Banggai cardinal just had babies! I didn't even know until just now. They are less than 1/2" and if my face wasn't 6" away from the tank, I would never had seen them. I guess that's another advantage of having a big tank- more stable water, more places to hide, and your fish might have babies without you even knowing it!
Cool. 😀

I just picked up a 50G PNP from SCA. It was on sale for $599 on their website, figured it was a deal I couldn't pass up!

I'm new to the hobby and this is my first tank. I'm ready to start working on the plumbing but debating between the durso or herbie. I picked up new standard ABS Slip x Slip bulkheads. Has anyone successfully done the herbie with 1/2" bulkhead and 1" bulkhead with 1/2" PVC and 1" PVC? Or are most expanding the piping for the 1/2"?

Congrats on the new tank! I have the same tank too. I've been looking in to the same question you have for some time now that from what I've read it could work but can be dangerous if you have an issue with your main drain. Where in Cali do you live? I'm going to drill my 1/2" to 1" soon. I'll let you know how it goes.

I upgraded my (150g) from durso to Herbie and couldn't be happier. The first night I filled the tank up and used the durso that came with it, it kept me up all night. It was like a leaking toilet that kept flushing itself every 3 minutes. Over the New Year vacation, I drained the overflow (thank God it was only the overflow I needed to drain) and put in an return line from the back and use the original 2 holes for herbie. Now it's completely quiet. (I sleep next to it and I am a light sleeper.) Trying to find the quietest return pump and protein skimmer is worthy of a whole new thread so I am not gonna rant here.

I was worried about the 1/2" was too small for the plumbing so I used PVC cement to fuse a larger PVC pipe on the outside (instead of slipping into the 1/2", unfortunately I can't find the pictures I took anymore).

It turned out that the overflow can't handle more than(1500gph?) of water anyway. I have a Fluval SP6 pump that is capable of 3434gpr. Even with running 2 reactors on the same return line, I have to close the gate 1/3 because the overflow couldn't let enough water come in.

Sorry I forgot to add- I suggest don't drill the hole bigger, you won't need it. The pump that comes with the tank is not big enough to use bigger holes. The pump I have is way more than I need but the overflow turned out to be the new bottleneck.

I am planning on upgrading to a 375g in the near future. My bio load is crazy high (40+ fish) and I have no place left for new coral. Every fish is getting big and fat and corals are growing like weeds. I know at least 3 of my fish are pregnant. This might be a beginner's luck because this is also my first marine tank. When and if I get a 375, I would do bean animal for sure. For 150g and under, I personally think herbie is good enough.

PS: What does anyone think of their 24g cube tank for $145? I am very tempted to get one, share the same sump as my 150, and use it as a grow out tank for fish babies.

You up some good points. Maybe drilling the tank might not be necessary but being the anal person that I am... I'm taking the risk and drilling my tank. Good thing for me is I've upgraded the return pump and if I did my math right I should be ok.

I am also planing to redesign the sump to allow space for a bigger skimmer down the road and have better use of refugium space. I'll post pics once I'm done with all my mods.

Hey guys,

I know this is a strange question, but how does the process of liftgate delivery of a 150g on pallet go for you. When they will be delivering I most likely alone at the house.

Can I just tell them where to put the pallet, like inside the garage?
Steve said they just set the pallet on the road. I need to move the tank/pallet behind the house. Can I put dollies underneath the pallet?

Did you get the stand too? Mine came with everything and was 695# on the shipping slip. The tank itself was about 350#. There is no way you can move it yourself unless you have a jack lift (not sure what's called) thing. The delivery person was dropping it off in my alley (I live in the last house. He didn't drop it off the main road.) I don't remember exactly what happened but he was nice enough to use the jack lift thingy to move it into my yard, about 30 feet.

However, the 2 pallet package sat in the yard under the tarp for another 3 weeks before I got enough people to help me move them into my room.

Nope, I ordered just the tank. I am having a steel stand built for it.

Was yours a 150 or a larger 210/240?

I found low profile corner dollies, rated for 1300 pounds as a set. My plan was to have him set the pallet on to the dollies placed at each corner. I am just not sure that a pallet can be supported from just 4 corners.

I had to google it to know what a low profile corner dolly was. Wow, they are expensive! LOL

Mine was a 150g. It took about 4 people move it "safely" up the stand. I did it with 2 but one of us almost got buried. Never again. Unless you have those glass moving suction cups.

You could do what my buddy did to get us to help him move. He called us all over on sat for day drinking. Of course we were all down! So when we all showed up at 10 am he said "k moving started at 10am and day drinking at 3pm"

Smh.... We clearly didn't have a choice once we where at his house. :headwally:

Oh hell no! Hahaha

1. Why would anyone wanna drink at 10am? I would've said I would come by in the afternoon in the first place.

2. If any of my friends pulled this on me, they would not be my friends anymore.

3. I don't help people move and I don't ask friends to help me move. I would hire some of those guys from homedepot and drop them off at my friend's house and pay them later.

The tank really weighs 350 pounds?

The ones I found are $114 for a set of 4 on Amazon.

For all those having an issue with it flushing, build this

The only tricky piece is where the flex hits the pipe, it was a cpvc to PVC adapter. Just bring an inch of the flex to test fit it. All slip fit, super easy.

Edit: cut the bottom on a 45 degree angle to let the water out.

Just got my tank today, why have so many people changed their plumbing from the one it comes with?

I can't figure out these bulkheads and plumbing what so ever, any help would be greatly appreciated.

It feels like I need to buy a couple of o-rings and the external side of the bulkhead, what is that even called?

Do the bulkhead connectors they gave me go inside of the tank? They provided the worst instructions and I can't wait to get started on that stand...

The plumbing that comes with it is metric so depending on where you are from, if you want to hard plumb your system, you have to swap out the parts for SAE.
I ended up dumping all the plumbing that came with mine because I need SAE and also the parts it comes with are pretty cheap. The cheap loc-line(read knock off) style returns are junk. mine all cracked trying to take them apart so I ordered real "loc-line".
