Ive recently purchased a scallop, white shell with red flesh/tentacles.

Ive noticed a thin blue electrical flash which pulses round the edge of its flesh.#

Does anyone know what this is?

I think it could be some sort of warning device to would be predators, but im unsure.

Also any info on the actual scallop's background would be nice.

cheers guys

It's normal for that species, they are very cool. I saw an urchin that did that as well.
I believe they are rather short lived though.

flame scallop will most likely die in a few months if not sooner

and it will more then likely try to move it self rather far

Just a few months might be a little soon. They are filter feeders so keeping your water column well fed will help. Mine found his preferred spot and has not moved since.

The electric flames are hard to keep unless you target feed with phyto and zooplankton. Best results is if you culture you own but some of the prepared plankton may be used if you feed on a regualar basis.

BTW--that refers to the coloration and not that they produce a current.
