scheduled power outage

Hey people,

Illuminating Power Co workers were just inspecting my back yard. They've got to heavily trim a bunch of trees to free powerlines. To do the work, they will have to turn off power for half a day. Fortunately, I will get a courtesy call. I just hope they don't schedule this for while I'm out of town or my wife will be upset/worried with the responsibility of my tanks.

Would kind soul be willing to lend/rent me a generator for this schudled power outage? Or do you think I will be fine? It's possible that the power could be out a minimum of four hours, but they thought more realistically, half the day, which I took to mean 12 hours.

They hope to schedule the work sometime in the next three weeks.

Thanks,
Ben

You might be able to get by with a cheap battery powered pump, which is always good to have around as a last resort in an emergency in any case. Basically you just need to maintain some flow/oxygen exchange and ideally some surface agitation and of course maintain the heat somehow (crank up the thermostat?).

You're right. That occurred to me shortly after I posted. I saw one in another RC thread. It might just be the way to do. Thanks!

Edit: Actually what I saw was a battery powered back up, not a pump but a unit with power supply.

it works.

It's not thrilling or tons o bubbles but it's something. You will need some D batteries. To go 12 hours would need 4 to 6. My rechargables that I tested it in were in the truck flashlight and they were pretty weak but I did get some bubbles into the water. Call if you want to borrow air pump.

Kerosene space heater (which I don't have here) would be the only way I could think of to heat an area in the 75 to 80 degree mark without power or a generator and you'd have to mind the thermometer and shut it off.

just to scare you, i found out two battery backups that were meant for computers were dead when i tested them just in case i lost power on saturday. now i'm not sur ei trust them for anything anymore. also its a couple hundred down the drain

Hi,

If you are concerned just about your tank then you could go with a power inverter that plugs into your car. You should be able to find one large enough to run a few pumps and your tank heater.

interesting....so i use my car as a generator and run a long extention cord to the tanks? might work.

you're right. I think I see a generator in my future, but down the line. I've got some other priorities with the little cash flow that happening now. I seems certainly to be the wisest decision.

You can use my generator it is enough to power you pumps, heaters and maybe a fridge, I didn't try the lights (tank). I have used it that way and it was a life saver durring a 3 day power outage last winter. I think it's a 3500 watter. PM me and you can finally see my tank if you come out. Your buying gas though...

Yeah! I knew there'd be a reason to come see your tanks! :)

PM sent. Thanks a bunch.

Kevin,

Doh! Why didn't I think of that! Great suggestion for future, similar situations.

You all are the best.

Cheers,
Ben

PS: someone has got to be interested in one of these anemones. I got the second one out of the tank today, so two need good homes.
