School of Royal Gramma?

Are three grammas enough to form a "school"? The harems I've seen while diving were always a half dozen or more. Some of the males were quite aggressive and totally fearless- they didn't think twice about about darting towards my mask in an attempt to nip at my eyes!

I would be worried that two grammas will pair off and the third end up taking the brunt of the pair's aggression. Please keep us posted- I'm curious to see how this works out.

Well, when I say school, I mean just swim and hang around each other.

if you want good advice read (reef fish: basslets, dottybacks and hawkfishes)
it is very possible idea. not many people will try it. but i would go for it

they live in harems not pair's.

Who said anything about pair, I know these fish don't pair up. It's several females and one male. I'm just hoping to get the right mix.

Anyone actually have more than a few and see them swim in school in the tank from time to time? At LFS I always saw one per tank, going in and out a cave, hard to imagine they will swim together in large number in the same tank. If so it would be the ultimate school.

I originally purchased 10 grammas for my 180, The Super male of the bunch killed off the other males in the tank. So out of 10 I have 5 left, Im guessing its 4 females to the one super male.
Its a cool looking desplay in my opion

Excellent video! Just like the harems I've seen diving except on a smaller scale. Congratulations- and thanks for sharing!

My group of five have been doing alot of spawning acts lately. I need to do a little research on how to raise the fry. I assume they lay eggs but I have to make a postive id on the eggs. I had some bright red eggs in the tank but the grammas were not tending to them and didn't seem to care when I had my hand by them?
If anyone does know of a thread or site on breeding them do tell!

Well, it's been a couple of weeks and it seems like the Grammas has found each other. Here's a video of them hanging out.

eidillitih - would love to hear an update as I'm thinking about getting 3 or probably 5 in my 340g. Want a group of fish that hang out together but bored of chromis....

Nope 10 minus 5 is five, I lost one in the sump and added him back Plus one equals 6 :)
Erik
Earilier in the thread I posted adding 10, then the dominate male killed off what I thought was 5. but it was only 4
the 6 are doing good together so Im guessing the one in the sump was also a female?
Erik

This is when I first added them, tank looks a 10 times better now.
just 6 of them made it. I've seen them spawn together, do the hole mating thing and saw eggs under there cave nest hangout too. Im looking into raising the fry now. SHould be fun challange
