Schooling

Pigmy Sweepers at the Georgia Aquarium. This is what I call schooling.

Not that your collection of yellow Tangs isn't gorgeous...just not quite what I have in mind.

The yellow tangs are not schooling. The pymy sweepers are schooling. Good example showing the difference between them.

dude, if thats not schooling I don't know what is. I read the differences and thats seems to fit it to the "t"

OK..OK...let's not quibble over definition of terms here.

I'm hoping that someone can find me a fish that groups together as tightly as the photo of the pigmy sweepers above. This is what I'm hoping to achieve, regardless of what it might be called.

it's not how tight they are, or what direction they face. Schooling is a different kind of behavior then just swimming with eachother. Schooling is almost mathematical.

Sam, of course, is right about schooling. quiksilver, I seem to recall that there was an English (British) gentleman with a VERY large tank that had them. I am not sure as my memory of this comes from quite a few years ago.

Not that I've been able to find. One supplier suggested that I could order, but the minimum would likely be 1000 fish. That's just a few too many...

Well, I am not getting back into the discussion except to suggest that (Apogon leptacanthus) Longspine cardinal fish will shoal and are pretty cool in a larger size aquarium. they are, however, poor shippers but once acclimated will do well.

Try the golden trevally only thing is they get pretty big.

look into glass cardinals. They always school and are great fish! Also if you can find them, orange spot cardinals(kinda look like FW tetras)

Please DEFINE "schooling" of reef fishes and "shoaling".

I agree; the yellow tangs are definitely not "schooling" in the strict definition of the term; schooling involves a much tighter formation and swim pattern.

Although it may be difficult to recognize the difference by looking at their definitions, they are absolutely separate behaviors.

A "school" of fish provides a variety of benefits to the individuals that a "shoal" does not, for instance predator confusion and avoidance by tightly "choreographed" movements between a large number of individuals.
A "shoal" does not provide such benefits.
