Scopas Tang?

My husband surprised me with a Scopas Tang for Mothers Day, I usually research the fish I purchase before hand, but now I have this beauty and am not very educated on him. Any suggestions? I would assume it eats the same food and the Hippo.

yes same thing. If you are feeding nori daily also supplement romaine. You can use mysis to soak their vitamins in. tons of protein in pe mysis.

So since I posted the Scopas has taught the hippo what the algae is!~ :) Tee hee. They are eating it all up. So now to the good stuff, where so I get the Nori? They are tearing all my live plants up, crud..........although it is fun to watch! :)

Your lfs ought to have it; however, you can also get it in many grocery stores (it's what they wrap sushi in).

I have a scopas and it a beautiful fish, especially once it settled down and showed it's real complexion. I love the small blue spoats against the background of their scales/skin. I love their eyes too. Mine loves everything. Mysis, plankton, formula 1, formula 2 flake, and nori. He's quickly becoming a fatty and that makes me very happy.

Enjoy your mother's day gift!!!

I love her!!!!! Thanks, this mothers day has been great, eas since my husband had not been the biggest fish fan. I am getting him to love it, like it or not. He he, he loves it too now! He buys me fish! :)

haha im glad you like it, i wasn't so blessed with mine...mine was in my 75 reef...i added a yellow tang, then a scopas about a month later, he killed the yellow tang 3 days later and severely hurt 2 other angels...i took him out and put him in my 30g only temporarily...and when i tell you he is one mean fish..i mean it...he damn near kills anything you put in after him...i have to be very careful with selection...truely an oddball tang

OOOOH hey scary story! I hate that. I hopeto only have nice kids in my tank. :) They all are getting along so far. The Hippo and the Scopas are acting like 2 Tangs, hanging out nicely. It is pretty cool.

i feed mine nori mostly and also some brine when i feed the others and also hand feed it some caulerpa

Errrr. I don't think this is a fair representation of a Scopas tang's personality. You mixed different species of Zebrasoma tangs together, adding 1 to another's tank. That is a VERY VERY bad idea and was surely going to end in the death of a fish.

You should not add Tangs to an established tank if there is another tang with the same body shape. They will fight until 1 is likely killed. Especially true with Zebrasoma tangs.

I have 1 Hippo and 2 Scopas tangs in my 125g. The Hippo was added first, and the 2 Scopas tangs were added together. They all get along with no problems. However, I would definitely not add another fish of the same body shape as either. Even my CBB was a stretch.

My Scopas tangs are fairly peaceful, only showing a slight bit of aggression towards my CBB (similar body shape, so expected). But they have caused no trouble and are very amusing to watch dart around the tank.

Well since I have 1 hippo and 1 Scopas I should be OK. They were added within 3 days of each other. They are "spooning" and hanging out a lot, like the clowns do. The Scopas looks as though he is showing the Hippo how to eat the algea, since the Hippo had NO intrest before the Scopas' intro. I hope that they continue to get along well, and hope that we have no death matches here!

Your hippo and scopas are vastly different in shape. You would have no problems with them together. My Hippo was by himself for approx 8mnths before I introduced the 2 scopas tangs.

I have had a scopas tang since March of 2005. He started in my 37 gallon because he was so small. He is in the display now and is quite a show-off. Only odd behavior is he likes to dine on Xenia. He once picked on my green torch when the automatic feeder jammed. Never have lost anything going on vacation but it sure was not nice to that torch. The xenia, who knows. They really like their caves and mine has a way of poking one eye out of his and watching everyone going by the tank. He has never picked on any of the other fish but he tries to heard them along if he gets nervous. He wants everyone in their designated hiding spots if he sees danger. He is as bad as my dog.

What kind of algea are you tangs eating? Are they both eating the same kind? I recently upgraded and have been thinking about either a hippo or a sailfin (I heard about the same as a scopas).

They should eat the same things. Last sailfin I saw though was a little over a foot long and he just ate a lot more of it. That fish could pack it away.

The advantage of a Scopas over a Sailfin or Hippo is that they won't grow anywhere near as big. A scopas will max out at about 5-6" in captivity. Some will grow bigger in larger tanks but this isn't overly likely.

While a Hippo will reach 12" and Sailfin roughly the same or a bit bigger.
