Score!!

That does really suck!!

I've had a frag of Cali Tort, that's been a frag, for about 2 years, putting on very little growth. Recently, though, it's actually starting to show an increase in growth, though nothing's changed, that I can figure out. Wish I knew what it was, that has caused the increase in growth, so I could make it a point to keep it going.

Do you know how long it took the Guy to grow out the colony you bought?

This is most bizarre, can't say i've ever seen this siht on a reef forum in the last 5 years for sure. Gotta love the web for all it's narsasistic virtues!

I am glad this got back on track, I to would like to know how long the tort took to get that size! I really thought I was in the lounge for a minute.

We did discuss this and believe it or not, he said he'd had it for 3 years. He purchased it, as a frag, from one of my favorite LFS, who has a beautiful colony of it and only frags it once a year.

This coral was growing, just below mid-way, in a 90 gallon, with a 2X150MH fixture!! I couldn't believe he'd got this kind of growth, under 150 MHs, OR that this had grown from a frag, in 3 years.

I actually just asked my girlfriend, who has a much better memory than me, being a few years younger, and she verified that he'd said 3 years!

It's funny how our systems are all different. I got my cali tort the same time as the Oregon tort and the cali is 3 times the size of the Oregon.

And a side note I have to say, "was" when I'm referring to the oregon because there was nothing left to frag when I got home today. I'll have to start over with a tiny frag again...

What???!!! Any idea what happened?

I changed my light configuration and I'm guessing it had to do with higher par of the light. One of my montiporas started to stn about a week after the new lights and I caught that one with minimal damage. The cali tort started to show signs a couple days ago, however I didn't notice it, my wife did but didn't tell me about it until this afternoon. I though that I would be able to salvage a small stem of it but when I got home it was totally gone.

This is an awesome thread and an even better find than that blue tort!

All kidding aside, to the OP, congrats! :) What an awesome find and hopefully it'll thrive and flourish in your tank! And if it gets too big, I'm sure some people in this thread wouldn't mind I piece. But I have dibs on the first frag!

Oh and thanks for starting the thread too! Right there in my top ten for sure!

Tell me about it. They grow super slow. To think its going to take me another year to get back to where I was with my new oragon.

Great find!
I do have a question though,
What does a matted filefish look like and where can I order one? I have majanoes and they are driving me nuts!
Thanks for you direction!

oh and to set it strait its not karate, its brazilian jiu jitsu . get it right. and no im not posting to threaten anyone. i am only posting to prove the joking comment i made earlier stating anyone can be tough behind a keyboard. we do not train to hurt people only defend our selves without striking, hence the difference between jiu jitsu and the rest of martial arts.

. if you were educated enough you would know the difference and that what we train is real. where is the proof in your pudding? i just posted pics to prove what i was saying. that was all and nothing more.

so how did this all get turned around when i was just providing evidence of what i said???? so who are the agressive people in the room shooting at the mouth beucase i was providing proof of a joking comment i made???

Haha, douche!

Before getting one, I'd advise you to do your own research on these guys. I did about 3 months of research and found that about 60% of people have found them to be completely reef safe, while about 40% of people have had them go after Zoanthids, after eating all the Aiptasia or Majanos.

So far, mine has been a model citizen, although Angie says it was really eyeballing one of our Echinos, the other day, so we're both keeping a close eye on it.

Another local hobbyist, recently picked one up, from the same LFS that I got mine. His was missing an eye, poor guy. The day after introduction, it was found picking at his SPS. In all the research I did, I never read about any of them picking at SPS.

It's important to get the right species, Acreichthys tomentosus, as a lot of Filefish share common names, and have more than 1 common name. For instance, this guy is called "Matted Filefish," "Leather Jacketed Filefish," and sometimes "Tassled Filefish." Each of those common names are shared by at least 3-5 other species of Filefish, which aren't as reef safe.

As far as where to get it, my LFS ordered it for me. He's now regularly ordering them, so they must not be difficult to find.

Here's a pic of mine, I took the other day.

Thanks for the info on it!
Can you share the website or tel # of your lfs? I am in Florida so I'd like to see if I could possibly get one out here.
Are these fish from the Pacific or Atlantic? Probably Pacific.
