Scribbled Angelfish

I am considering getting a Scribbled Angelfish in the near future for my reef tank. I am looking to get a small one, waiting on some of the online vendors to get them in (where's the best place to buy btw?). So who has this fish in their reef? How are they and with what corals? Hows the temperment? Relatively hardy? Eating habits? I was considering a regal, but they are always so hit or miss with eating, plus I like the blue in the scribbled and they aren't as commonly seen. Thanks for any info anyone can give, it is much appreciated.

The dude who runs our LFS had a nice sized one in his personal system. IIRC, It did fine with the SPS but did pick on the clams a bit. He generally considers the experience an positive one.

I have never personally had one.

My reef is mixed, mostly softies and LPS. I have two clams, lots of zoos. I have my cube that I can put any corals into that the angel picks on. I also plan on having a flame as well. I expect my zoos, clams and open brains to get eaten, but everything else should be ok.

I know someone who keeps one in a reef (SPS dominant) with no problems to my knowledge. Absolutely gorgeous fish!

The person I know is a member here, and if he sees this post he'll chime in. If not I'll shoot him a link so he can give input.

Im considering one in my new system, and I would also think clams and LPS are pushing it, but SPS would be OK.

Ha, figures, my system will have no SPS. I am not a fan, I think the softies will be ok, some of the LPS. Really I think it is the fleshy LPS (open brains etc) zoos and clams are at risk. I don't know which angel would be the better decision, scribbled, regal or blueface? Or if anyone else has a suggestion? Thanks for all the input.

Watanabei. Seriously, I have had some decent luck with large angels in reefs, but I would recommend them to nobody.

I asked the LFS owner and he said that his destroyed some zoos and some polyped-softies (xenia and cloves) in just a few weeks. He didn't have any LPS.

as with all angels non are really reef safe it really just dependson the fish. they are like humans some people steal others dont this is just an example.... take the scribbled angel for example one might be great in a reef and another will eat everything in sight it a hit and miss situation just be ready to catch it if it does. oh and i have herd storys of angel fish in a reef tank that have been there for years with no prob and all of a suden from one dsy to the next they go on a eating spree and devoure every coral in sight

jda, thanks for asking the lfs owner. Hmmm, I have xenia and gsp, I wanted those corals to cover the back wall/overflows instead of coralline algae. I have always liked the watanabei. I've had some luck with a few angels in softy tanks, mainly juvi emperors and dwarfs with leathers and shrooms. I've had plenty of experience with both, angels are more important to me, but I love the reef look.

dones, I know any angel can be a terror and some can be safe. While they all can just snap one day like clown triggers do when they hit a certain age.

DamnPep, have you thought at all about one of the other, less common Genicanthus species? Personally, I'm not that crazy about the looks of most of the typical ones people have. Although I've never seen one in person nor read much about them, I really like the semifasciatus.

I have thought about the swallowtails. They just aren't blue at all, I really liked the blue in the scribbled. I still am considering a Genicanthus angel, wonder if they would pair up?

I think I am going to go with a female watanabei angel. I wonder if I got two would one change into a male? I've seen people with multiple genicanthus angels, especially female watanabei angels.

It's possible. There's never been a study or any kind of obvious pattern to Genicanthus sex changes in home aquaria.

I've had two female watanabei's for around 9 months now. One is getting slightly bigger, but no change yet. They were added at the same time and get along fine.

I have a 5-6" scribbled angel in my 220 SPS reef and he does great. I have had him for nearly 2 years now, he was about 4" when I got him. Model citizen with what I keep.
