Scroll coral? Turbinaria reniformis

Are scroll corals difficult to keep? I have never kept SPS before, my tank is mainly softees with LPS
tanks specs
220 g
250x3 mh 10k w/actinics
ph 8-8.1
temp 80
nitrates 10ppm
alk and calc are bit high for some reason
calc 540 and alk 15 dkh

do you think it will be ok in my tank? tank is well over 2 yrs old

I have found mine to be very easy to keep, although it is a very slow grower for me. If you want to try your hand at SPS, I would get some montis instead, just as easy, nicer colors and grow much faster.

I have one and its a slow grower and not a easy to keep coral

I have found mine to be very easy to keep, although it is a very slow grower for me. If you want to try your hand at SPS, I would get some montis instead, just as easy, nicer colors and grow much faster.

Scrolls are very easy to keep. To grow fast I believe they need to be absolutely pounded with as much flow and light as possible. Think about how thick the folds grow, those things are made to live in some serious current.

My yellow scroll which has been fragged more times than I can count. Survived a full blown crash and was 1 of 3 out of 70 corals and polyps that survived, is 14 inches & around 9 or 10 years old. They grow slow, but are very tolerant to just about anything.

thanks that pic is under phoenix 14k on m80 ballasts.now im using ushio 20k's and it looks better.250watt de bulbs.

i also have a turbinaria. it is very tolerant and has survived in my system for 5 years. i started with a quarter sized frag and now it is close to 10 inches across. yes it does grow slow but it also survives........ not a bad thing when you are starting in a new direction

Mine started receding about a month ago, with about 20 polyps gone. I added a Vortech and I am hoping that it was low flow that was making it recede.

is it getting shaded? that could cause it to regress. i once had a hydnophora ""attacking" it and that also caused it to regress in the area attacked....

I agree with most! easy, but fairly slow growing. one of my favorites.

I had one that grew pretty fast in my old 60 gallon tank and used 4 vho bulbs. I had a pretty insane turnover rate in that tank with a mag 9, and 3 korallia 4s. I think what gave me luck with it was that I fed it several times a week with cyclopeaze. My experience is that these corals take well to being fed regularly. These corals do not like getting detritus on them.

i agree it is pretty easy to take care of. the polyps on mine only come out at night for some reason tho. i was curious what position it likes most... like does it like to be placed horizontally or vertically?

Unless the 15 for alk is a typo you might want to get that down to around 11 or lower before you add any more corals. 15 sounds pretty high.

FYI, not that it matters much but it is considered a lps. It does look like a sps.
