Sea Dragons? is it possible?

Is it possible to aquire a sea dragon in the USA?

I was just read the riot act by inquiring at my LFS.

I have read where they are protected by law,
I have also read where they are exported in small numbers.

Whats teh real story, I would love to have one.

I think they have them at the shed aquarium in chicago if you want to see them in person. I know I saw them somewhere, I think that was it.

We see the Weedy Sea Dragons all the time back in Sydney...they're beautiful little guys... slow and tricksy.

Toledo Zoo has them, they also have a dragon eel in the next display which looks way cool too.

I'm pretty sure the weedys are actually being captively breed right now. I have the book lying around here but they are possible to get at about 10k each and they are a temperate species to boot. Good luck trying.

One of the seadragon species is being bred--albeit I dunno if it's commercial or still just research. They have a mating video (seadragon porn) at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach

Apparently there is one guy in Germany who had success in breeding them, I don't know the name or any other details. Just heard that he was successful. He has a group of 5 or 6 in a 2000+ gal tank, cooled to 20 Degrees Celsius, even the juveniles only eat live shrimps. All these informations came from the guy who build the tank, no guarantee that these infos are correct.

These guys die at higher temperatures, one public aquarium in Germany has killed a few because they have the money for buying expensive fishes but no money for a decent chiller.....:uzi:.

Like the Nautilus and some other critters this is an animal that can be kept under very special conditions but should not be attempted by the normal hobbyist. There is a reason for having a Red List for species that are not allowed to be traded.
