Is your nutrient problem with nitrogen or phosphorous? I think macroalgae like chaetomorpha or caulerpa would grow faster and be better at removing nutrients.
Turtle grass is a vascular plant. Unlike algae, it absorbs its nutrients mainly through its roots, so its not a good candidate for removing nutrients from the water column. Algaes like chaeto are a better choice for this.
However, if you are concerned about a nutrient build up in your sand bed (a number of people here claim there are long term issues with nutrient re-release) then turtle grass would be an excellent choice.
You can, of course, always plant them just for looks too .
