Sea Spider ?

So I am in the process of setting up my new 40 gallon tank!! I was rearranging the rock I just got and I believe it was a spider I saw running in between the rocks :( There isn't anything in the tank but the rock ,sand ,and water.. What can I do to get rid of it?? I really hate to take out all the rock . I finally got it where I want it. Lol .. But I am guessing I'm gonna have to do that.. Should I dip the rock in the stuff I have for corals or fresh water dip? Suggestions please .. Oh and the spider was kinda clearish ? Almost the color of the sand ..

I would actually guess it to be an amphipod, and not a spider. Amphipods live in the rock and sand. They are big enough to see, unlike copepods. They are harmless, and part of the clean up crew that comes in live rock.

I don't think so , I just googled a amphipod and the picture didn't look like what I saw. It was about the size of a penny. If I see it again I will try and get a picture.

Your fish should probably gobble it up if it's not that big and not a pest. Hopefully it's not a mantis shrimp because those guys come in all different shades of color and could take out anything you put in the tank. You could always go fishing! Take a 2 liter bottle, cut the top off, attach string, lift, and wait for the culprit. good luck.

What type of stock are you going to go with in the 40 breeder? lmk if you have any pics of your 180 gallon, always wondered how it looked.

Lets hope the fish get whatever it is I saw. Lol. The 40 is a fluval tank. I love it!! My husband got it for me as a birthday present :) I will put up pics soon. And last week I got some Allardi clownfish that will be going in there and I also have a pair of black clownfish that will go in there .If they get along. I haven't introduced them yet. And a six line wrasse , she came in as a surprise with the rock :) And I have two anemones as well.

I will try and find some pics of our 180 , they were on a computer that went bad :( But hopefully they are backed up some where. That tanks been down since June .. I had a bad thing of snails and hermits come in and they all died and my levels spiked horribly .. Lots most of my fish. Everything but a blue hippo and a yellow hippo.. Who woulda thought Dori would make it over everything else. And we moved so I never set it back up. (Found other fish a new home) So there is a empty 180 sitting in my living room. Hubby wants to make it a shark tank... I don't about that though..

could u give more details to help id,Sound like a crab of some sort.. there is a few with hairy legs and look like a spider

It could very well have been a sea spider based on your description. They reproduce by laying eggs in and on coral polyps. There are many different varieties and they all seem to have their own specific tastes; i.e. some like zoas, some like sps, etc.....

Manual removal works well but you could be in for a long haul. If that was my tank, having been through an infestation, I'd start over while I could.

That's why I love dry rock!!

wow, I wasn't sure what a sea spider was so I googled it. Holy smokes are they creepy looking. If I saw one in my tank I am pretty sure I would never put my hands in my tank again.

Sorry I haven't been on in a few days .. Been busy !!!

I really dont know how to describe it other then it looked like a clearish/tanish gross spider? Lol. I possibly could of been a crab since I just got a glance at it. But I feel it looked more like a spider!!

And I'd hate to start over .. Might have to though.. Looks as though something is eating my blue cloves :(

My husband got the rock from someone in Alliance. I also found a porcelin crab in there, I was freaking out cause i didn't know what it was at first. Lol .. I was all crazy with the food tongs trying to catch it to identify it.

Ive only seen zoa eating spiders which look just like a white to brown spider but not bigger than a penny. Others seem to be rare. Watch your zoas.

i just found a zoa spider in my tank,, wich is only a little over a month old. pannicked about it because i didnt wanna tear my tank down to catch the creep. devised a plan to put a small cheap zoa frag in a small spaghetti sauce jar under its lair. came home ready to set it up, and noticed my coral banded shrimp wasnt in his "lair" seen his whiskers behind the rock the spider was suspected of living in,where his cave lets out the back, got nervous and looked around the back, and to my pleasure, coral banded shrimp 1, zoa spider 0. he had it in his claws eating it. even though the shrimp can tend to be a bully for people, he earned a new found respect in my tank, and i got my first zoa lol

Thats awesome!! Lol , I don't have a coral bandit!! Maybe I shouldn't invest in one!! But my tanks been doing great .. Only pesty thing I have now are spaghetti worms!!
