Seahorse temp. question

For the overflow, you can buy them with those U tubes going from an internal to external container or you can do a DIY overflow out of PVC if you are handy.
Either way you need a return pump of some kind.
This is the way I did them. I may have already posted but my memory is bad.

funkejj i understand what your saying and i have been taking ( yours mostly) but also everyones advice seeing that im rookie to this its been getting confusing when i hear plenty of different views. i feel that what you say does work for you. i feel like it is a hit or miss kind of thing im sure your tank is beautiful but as for me i dont feel i have enough expertise to handle that. i think im better safe than sorry. i would love to cut costs down and spend as little money as i can for a filter is pricey... i just want to do what is best for my tank, and i think i should get a filter/sump after giving it some thought for the basic fact of being better safe than sorry. i do love your idea of not having one though and maybe something i def. will try when i get a little more expirance. i greatly appreciate everything if i hadnt said it enough.

When it comes to a sump well I am all for it. I wish in how we have this tank I would have had the space to have a sump but just did not work out. A sump will have a lot of advantages of being able of hiding equipment as well as using your return flow as flow for your tank. I was just referring to HoB filters.

oh i get it. but now i think that is the way i "should" go. now with the sump i wouldnt need a power head right? and do you know how i would go about setting one up with a hang of the back U pipe? (i think thats what its called.) and btw i am getting the d120 evergrow. and they asked me if i want to change the layout. do you have any sugesstions on that? or should i just go with the default?

For the light go to the chinese led thread and find a layout that you like. I am not sure how the hang on over flow works. The tanks we have with sumps are all drilled and the return lines are spread thru the tank. I am not sure how that works with a HoB over flow.

so you have a drilled 40 gallon tank? everybody i have talked to in person says that they dont even make any tank under 55 drilled.. i think im going to cut my losses and just go with what i know . HOB filter lol....

I have drilled my 180 reef, drilled 90, and our 40 seahorse tank is not drilled. It is the only system that doesn't have a sump right now.

hey funk, i know that you have the bh2000 i just got it in and i have had it set up for about 2 days now. and i wanted your input on this seeing that you have one. i dont know how a skimmer works at all. so ill hit you with one question at a time. so first is there is a little hole on the left side of the collection cup that pours water/foam into the output. i have looked this up and some say that its good and other say its bad. i wanted to know what you think i should do about that if anything at all? im thinking that when it does start getting that nasty stuff out of the tank wouldnt it just dump back into the output and put it right back into the tank..

After break in it will be fine but until then it will throw a bunch of micro bubbles. We get a little trickle from it. Depends on how wet you are skimming and how far down you have the cup set. I personally wouldn't worry about it.

how far down do you place the cup? and mine came with circle black sponges that i placed on the output. i guess to prevent the bubbles from getting into the tank.

Ok the depth you set it is all based on how you want to skim, you will know where you want it with a little practice. to far down and really wet skim to far up and hardly any. it took us about 4 or 5 days to find where we like it but we still adjust from time to time. The foam we had in for the longest time and it broke loose and floated to the top so I pulled it out. I plan on replacing it back when I break it down to clean it next. But yes on the output side.

oh ok and wet skim is bad right? and so the little hole is just fine then right?

Wet skim is fine in fact we skim very wet on one of our tanks and use it as part of our water changes. Five gallons a day. Again the hole is fine.

my skimmer always end up with a lot of water in the cup after just maybe 20 mins then i adjust it and play with it but now i got a really loud draning sort of noise and its not from the output because i covered it with a a piece of foam. any thoughts on that?

How long has it been running? when we were breaking it in over the course of a week we first had the mass of micro bubbles then we had a siphon issue on the drain side. We fill the cup every 2 or 3 days at this point and it is nasty brownish looking stuff. Just let it break in and the issues should pretty much vanish.

a little over a week now. and i dont have to bubble problem i used the O foams on the output that they provided and tgat works great for stopping the bubbles and i hope it will thanks tho youve been mich help
