I strongly advise against keeping plastic plants in any marine aquarium. They will just gather debris and algae and be more of a pain than anything else. IMO, liverock is an excellent filtering option. Learn more about liverock and starting a marine tank here.

Your questions would be better answered if you posted a brand new thread in either the New to the Hobbby forum or the Nano Reefs forum, explaining your situation, and what exactly it is you want this tank to be. Also, check out www.nano-reef.com

Thanks Ted. Reading your post has already helped me save a lot of time. Seems like the search engine is bogged down a lot, but it is helpful when it works.

Hey JFugett, did you read Part 2 my friend? If not, it explains how to use the "Search by User Name" function. All you do is type your own username in the box, then hit the "Perform Search" button. It will return a listing of threads you've started and/or posted in. You can also subscribe to any thread you want to follow closely and see all of your subscribed threads in your "My RC" section. Here's a reprint of Part 2 section for your reading enjoyment:

Part 2. The ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œSearch By User Nameââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ box:
If you are looking for a particular post or thread written by a specific user, this is where you would type in that personââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s username. For example, typing ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œclownfishââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ in the Keyword box and ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œK9ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ in the User Name box would bring up threads containing the word ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œclownfishââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ that K9 (my user name) had started or responded to.

A big "You're Welcome!" to everyone who's left nice comments. For those of you having difficulty sometimes accessing the search feature, try becoming a premium member. I know it's not what everyone wants to do in order to be able to use the search, but for $24/year, you're supporting a good cause and getting access to WAY more information than any $24 reefkeeping book could provide. There is one other problem that you don't mention when guessing about why members don't search for information more often. In my experience (maybe 20 to 30 attempts) the search function is NEVER available. I have not once been able to complete a search, despite trying on several different days and over many different times of day. Do other members have this problem?

Second question. Whenever the search engine is unavailable (every time in my limited experience) I receive a message inviting me to become a premium member and informing me that premium members get priority when searching. All well and good, I have no problem with supporting a forum that I use a lot, but as a new member I would rather decide how useful I think rc is before I shell out some money. The site seems to have a ton of information available, the search function would be the most obvious way to verify/use that. What experience do premium members have when they try to do searches? Is the search engine usually available? 50% of the time? 10% of the time? It would be a bummer to become a premium member and still wonder about things.

Thanks again for the info on how to structure a search. Maybe someday I will get a chance to use it.
 
Hope that my earlier post didn't seem too ungrateful. It is wonderful that this site exists at all, even if the search engine doesn't work for the chepskate members. Two more questions:

1) Habib is right on about spelling errors. I realized that if I make one in the search it isn't helpful, but I forgot about the fact I still will miss threads if the original post is using funky spelling. That brings me to my question--is there any easy way to spell check a post before submission? I know I could do it in Word, or something, and then paste it into the post window, but is there a spell checker available as part of the RC post process?

2) Still curious how available the premium members find the search engine. If you don't fess up and tell me I may just have to join to find out. Tsk! tsk!
