Searching Reef Central Efficiently: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Re: Re: Search engine

Re: Re: Search engine

What crap! You have to pay to use the search function. It isn't like RC is funded/run by some poor college kid in a cellar, you get money from your advertisements.

Hmm, I can use the search function on any other site without being a member or purchasing some software. I may not be able to post on there site but I can search, and for a site that's supposed to to contain all this great information you charge people to search for it? Other people provide the info but RC profits from it, and so far from what I've looked at most info is just opinion.

I'm not just singling out RC, almost every other Saltwater site I have visited is the same way, they just don't charge you to search it. I can understand that you may have a lot more skewed info to keep and that costs $$ but at least be honest and say that only members can search and grey out the search button for non-members rather than have them click 200 times for three hours thinking they might get some where.

FYI to non-premium members that want to search, you can try using google, the results aren't the "freshest" but you'll usually get hits. Here's a snip of a post I made on another forum, hope this helps some RC members:

If you're like me, you're not crazy about vbulletins search engine. It basically works like this: It takes the first word and finds all matches, then takes that list and matches the second word, etc etc. It's not quite as smart as Google's search engine. If you are looking for something that the search engine doesn't help you with try google instead. In google plug the following in:
+site:reefcentral.com
followed by a space and then your search terms. Keep in mind the data won't be as fresh as the local site search engine. Google sweeps the site every few days so if what you are looking for is 3 days old or newer you're better off using the sites engine.

Keep the following syntax in mind:
- must not include parameter
+ must include the parameter
~ synonym's acceptable
quotes - parameter must look for entire phrase
i.e.: I want to search this site and it must contain the word coral, must not contain the phrase calcium mix and preferably contains water or any synoym of water I would search for:

+site:reefcentral.com +coral -"calcium mix" ~water

great tutorial, however I have never been able to use the search option-it always says too busy or not available-which other members have commented on also. If I could use it, then it would stop some of the multiple posts and would be faster information then posting a new thread IMO. Thanks for the hard work, will keep trying to use the search Jolene

I've never been able to get the search to work either.

I for one am getting a little sick of having to pay for every silly little thing on the internet. What happened to quality free website hosts? Quality free e-mail? Free Message Boards??!?

I realize that there is overhead when running a site like this, but that is what corporate sponsors, advertising, and banner ads, etc are there to pay for.

Just my 2 cents. Otherwise, great tutorial on searches, just wish I could use it.

Oh well, off to google I go...

I'm new here as well, and this is a great site. However, I find the search only if you're a member thing to be an unusually distasteful method to try and get members. Just SAY "Only Paying Members Can Search" and save us newbes the PITA experience of trying to search 100 times only to find out the hard way that it will NEVER work.

I support many, many sites with my money on the internet, but ONLY because I want to support them. I make the choice to support them based on the use of all the resources they have available, which I will never be able to do on this site.

Thats a shame, IMO

this is a pretty useless thread IMHO, search feature works only after midnight PST. At least before it would randomly work if you put the effort out. I'm getting a feeling that someone do this on purpose so we can pay a the premium. :worried2:

Being a newbie with reefs I went to the internet and found all kinds of information on this site! Unfortunately the search doesn't work unless I pay for it so I used another way of searching. You can use google to search. Say you are searching for "RO/DI" - go to google and search for:

site:reefcentral.com ro/di

You can use use advanced searches on google too - just make sure you put in "site:reefcentral.com" without any spaces.

That will give you only results from this domain. The downside is that it's not up to the date current - it's a few days behind because it has to spider the site to index it every few days.

If this post isn't allowed, please delete it.

Same, almost never able to use the search feature. Probably why you see so many posts asked again and again because the search hardly works for just reg members.

This thread was very informative for me, bump for all the newer guys that have problems searching

Ironic isn't it? The reason they cite for not being able to search is due to increased usage and to attempt to cut down on bandwidth. The mere fact people can't search results in an increase in posts which in turn increases bandwidth usage...
