SEAS June thread

Well, dang! The frag swap had some GREAT turnout, eh? I was pleasantly surprised to see hardly anyone I'd seen before! Once everyone got there and the frags were in the tanks, Jason’s kitchen looked cooler than some hole-in-the-wall aquarium stores I’ve been in! I apologize for not keeping touch here in RC with anyone. Things have been dicey here at the 'ol homestead fer the last couple 'o weeks... so priorities kick in... you get the point…
Anyway, my e-mail in-box is fulla SEAS stuff! Lemme try to address as many of the questions HERE as I can.

1 - We are having a SEAS get together next month at John Kelly’s place. I think this is gonna be the SEAS DIY Liverock workshop pt 2. I have a couple of chunks in my 110g from the first batch â€"œ and you couldn’t tell any difference from my other rock! I’m sure John will post more details as the date closes in.
2 â€"œ Steve Q (kb0vhy) has volunteered to have the following meeting at his place. Maybe during the workshop at the Kelly’s, we SEAS nerds can put our heads together to come up with some ideas as far as WHAT we can do (besides check out Steve’s corals).
3 â€"œ We’re growing… fast! We are going to NEED to have some official positions. Just off the top of MY head, we should have a VP and some sort of HTML guru. I’m sure we could have other positions as well. We can vote on VP at the Liverock workshop. But let’s go ahead and take suggestions for postions and who to fill them. I’ve seen Jason’s name get tossed about for VP â€"œ and dude [Jason], you had the highest concentration of fish nerds in your home I’ve seen in a long time â€"œ so I have no problem seeing you “run” for the position.
4 â€"œ Someone asked about our OLD SKOOL SEAS membership cards ‘ol Anthony made up. Maybe we can dig up some cash in the ‘ol SEAS treasury and make something official looking to laminate. Anthony had arranged for a discount at a handful of places. I can make calls to any LFS anyone would like to see us TRY to get a discount… so we can have them listed on our cards. WAAAAY back, someone asked about SEAS shirts â€"œ maybe as part of the deal for them to offer us a discount, we could tell them we’ll put their business’s name and phone numbers on the backs of the shirts???
5 â€"œ The mentoring program sounds great, Jason â€"œ if anyone wants to take a new hobbyist under their wing, they should do so. I felt like going into one of my world famous fits in the [CHAIN PET STORE] when I saw the horribly generalized/simplified information they were trying to hand out to their potential saltwater newbies… Your Aquarium in a public place for us to maintain idea is brilliant â€"œ but it would take some hardcore commitment from all of us â€"œ maybe we can discuss that at the Liverock workshop as well??? One way I had thought to get the word out about us was to create a press release and get it going around. I took a technical writing class a few years ago â€"œ and one thing we did was make a press release for a non profit organization. I was thinking of getting a in touch with my old professor and see if she could tell me who (besides the News-Leader) all I should get it to???

Anyway, there it is gang. Pick it apart, change it, build on it â€"œ it’s as much your group as anyone else’s and I’m not easily offended!

I’ll watch THIS thread for further developments!

Oh, by the way.... the public aquarium idea goes to Steve. When I was visiting him and his beautiful tank, he mentioned it, and I though it would be a great way to do something in the public eye. GREAT IDEA STEVE!

One Idea I was thinking about, is a crisis tree.

What is that you ask?

Well, say something at your house happens like you overflow your tank and blow out a system pump. Though most of us could probably get by with stuff lying around, others may not. If we had an inventory of extra items everyone has when emergency situations occur they could place a call to someone on the tree (flow chart). It could be something they desperately need but were unable to plan for, like Rubbermaid tubs because of a leaking tank. I’m not talking about a For Sale list; I am talking about lending extra equipment to people in need until they are able to replace the item. If it led to a buy/sell then that is ok but it should be more of a “help a brotha/sista out” thing.

How many times have you been in a situation where the stores are closed or an item is hard to find in Springfield? If all you needed was a piece of PVC or something it could be helpful. In addition it could serve as a contact list. We could also create an electronic version of the list with using a spreadsheet or something.

This does not have to be limited to equipment; it could be a knowledge base also. Like someone may be really good with identifying and treating fish. If some could call the person that has a lot of experience with a particular issue that may be useful too.

I know we use the SEAS thread as a point of contact but in situations where you don't have time for a response to a post this may be a good option in times of need.

Maybe it’s a stupid idea…

I can BARELY remember but I think that there was quickcrete, crushed oysters hells, sand, and a few other things involved. We would make a "mold" with sand - fill with the mix - then they would sit in a tub for a looooong time until they were cured - I got a sweet "needle's eye" sculpture I made that looks cool when the fish swim through it.
