Second Attempt

I was way too impatient the first go around, so here is attempt number 2.

29gal tank with 20lbs of live sand, 8lbs of crushed coral on top, 40lbs of live rock, marineland filter, 100w heater, 3 powerheads, and a Current-USA Pro LED light.

The rock has been in for 3 days, and the ammonia has spiked.
What's next?

It is a waiting game. Wait for the nitrites to go up then back down down followed by the nitrates.

FWIW I would pull the crushed coral out now. There is a good chance that it will just end up trapping detritus causing excess nutrient issues. Good luck just my 2 cents.

It would help if you don't mind looking at it. I ran a 29g mixed reef successfully for quite awhile without one. IMO it is small enough to be able to use WC's to good advantage. Good luck just my 2 cents

Water change.

I use a Tunze 9004 on a 29g tank with a high bioload and it has been great. I can get away with once a month 10% WC.
