"seeding" with live sand

Hello all,
I am finally getting close to adding water to my new 65 gal cube

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=1343381

I got new sand for the new tank. The new sand is the really fine stuff. I have 2 other tanks that I can pull a little sand out of, but both have larger granular sand. So my question is, does it matter if I put the older live sand underneath the new, or does it have to go on top? Would I get the same results if I added the sand to the new refugium, or does it need to be in the display?Hopefully this makes sence.

Thanks for any and all help

Just go a head and mix the old sand into the new. It will not matter where you put it, unless you put it at the bottom of a deep sand bed.

Thanks Percula, I am using a shallow sand bed in the display. I just dont want to see the old sand as it is much bigger than the new sugar size sand, thats is why I was asking about puting it underneath.

Thanks again

Go ahead and put it underneath. But don't be surprised if the larger pieces work themselves up to the top as worms and snails move through the sand.

They used to bother me but now I see it as looking more natural. Plus my tux urchin loves to decorate himself with the larger pieces.

I have the same question with my new 65 as well but i would not like to mix the two sands at all
so i was wondering would i get the same results if i just set the cup of the "Seeding sand" into the 65?
