Sentinel heartworm meds

I ordered the large dog chews of Interceptor.
I have a 230 gallon display with 70 gallon sump =300 gallons.
Should I trim down the pill to account for rocks and actual volume?.. which is probably 250 gallons I would be guessing.
I'm pretty sure I can catch my cleaner shrimps but my emerald and pistol will be nearly impossible. I've only seen the pistol 2 times in about 3-4 months and that was for a split second. I hate the thought of killing him as he does live with a watchman goby.

Awesome!!!!!!

I did my first dose on Saturday (the 5th). I saw no stress at all. It was like I didn't even do it. About 3-4 hours after I dosed the tank I could not find a single red bug! I could barely believe it. I left it in for 12 hours anyways even though they were gone in 4. I am going to repeat treatment this coming Saturday and the following one too. I am super happy and cant wait for my acros to finally reach their full potential!:celeb1:

Thats great!! I too felt like you did! I was a bit skeptical that it could work so easily and so well. When I woke up and saw zero red bugs I couldn't believe my eyes! You will be astonished how quickly the acros make a turn around. Mine were coloring up and fully extending polyps in less than a week. Im super stoked for you congrats man!

The sentinel I got was also the chewable tabs. They are tough to dissolve it took about 30 minutes of non stop shaking in a cup with a lid to get it dissolved. Make sure you make it as fine as possible before you add it to any water. My best advice would be to use a lemon zester if you can get one cheap. I would definitely account for rock displacement. It doesnt have to be a perfect exact science but try to figure as close as possible to be on the safe side. Catching shrimp and crabs can be a real pain. I no longer keep them in my tank so I didnt have to worry when I dosed the sentinel. I did however have to catch two peppermint shrimp about a year ago after they started feasting on my LPS. They too seemed impossible to catch as they lived in a cave at the very bottom of my rockwork where in met the sand. They only ever came out for food and it was mostly at night, and for a very brief couple of seconds. After countless attempts with no luck, i took a clear glass pilsner, put a piece of raw table shrimp in it rubber banded to a small piece of rock rubble and dropped it in the sand near their cave. I shut all the lights off and waited by the tank. In less than five minutes they were both inside eating the shrimp and I simply took my net, covered the end of the glass, and lifted it out of the tank. They have been happily residing in my sump since. Sorry for the long post but I figured maybe you could give that a try with your pistol shrimp and emerald crab so you didnt have to risk killing them. Good luck with the treatment and keep us apprised!!

Are you guys leaving the beef flavor coating on the tabs? Also, After treatment are you able to re-establish your pod populations?

Its been over a month since I did my treatment. I have a lfs that utilizes algagens live feeds program and they sell live rotifers and pods. Ive been buying a bag of each every wednesday and with two wrasses and two pipefish, it has taken until just this week before I have begun noticing a significant population of pods in the tank again. I have a huge ball of chaeto in my sump that I empty the rotifers and pods into to give them refuge to populate before they make their way to the DT, so I would say if you are aggressive in the amount you add the pods and give them a safe place to reproduce you can repopulate the tank in a relatively short period of time. Just as an FYI the sentinel completely wiped out my 3 year old BOOMING pod population.

Thanks. I have a pretty good pod population myself and my sixline loves them. My biggest concern was that any residual chemicals left in the water over time would make it impossible for pods to thrive but it sounds like you are able to sustain them again. Good news!

Thank you greg1786 for this info. I think I have the dreaded red bugs from a frag order. I though logul dip would get them and qt. but I guess I was wrong. I don't have a dog any idea how to get sentinel? With you adding pods have you been able to keep pod population? How long did you run fresh carbon before replacing?

I just sent you a pm bigzman. I have been able to sustain a pod population again. It was a bit more difficult than when I originally seeded the system years ago. I had no pod specific eaters when I originally seeded so it took no time. Now I have two pipe fish and two wrasses so it was a bit more tideous. I was buying a bag of rotifers and a bag of pods from my lfs who uses the algagen live foods program. Every week a rep from algagen comes to the fish store and fills up a reactor full of pods and a reactor full of rotifers( live of course) and my lfs sells them by the bag. This was a much better route than buying the tisbe pods that come in the bag with green water that are sitting on the shelf for god knows how long. Not to mention with the tisbe pods your lucky to see one or two in the bag but with this live foods program you can see thousands of them scurying about when you buy a bag. Anywho, i bought one bag of pods and one bag of rotifers every wednesday for about a month before I started seeing pods on the rocks and glass again. I would bring them home and dump them directly into a ball of chaeto in my sump. As for the carbon I added new carbon about 12 hrs after the treatment and if my memory serves correct I changed it four days later. After that I have only changed it once since then and it was this passed monday during my weekly water change/ routine maintenance. Hope this helps

Petsofoz.com They're out of Australia so it take a couple weeks to get it.
Consider the Bayer advanced for dipps. I was using CoralRx and it obviously didn't kill red bugs. Neither will kill flatworm eggs or bubble algae and other algae spores. At 10Ml per cup of water I've seen it kill redbugs and AEFW, Planaria. Corals were very happy with the Bayer. It's not a majic dip that kills all so I won't be adding anything without a QT in the future.

Greg,

Thank you for all the info in the PM. I went ahead and did Bayer DIP on the suspected frags and placed back into QT. I didn't see any red bugs or AEFW. I did notice Bristle worm and starfish and plenty of dead pods. I will now use Bayer dip on all frags it seems very effective as nothing made it out and coral looks great still. I will do it again next week just to make sure. Av8bluewater, just so I never have to worry I will be ordering sentinel in the event of a out brake.

Finally finished my third Interceptor spectrum dose. Have not seen a single red bug since 3 or 4 hours after the first dose. I'm super happy! Success!

@bigzman, happy to hear there are no red bugs. Bayer is an excellent product to have on hand. I dip all of my acros in it before putting them in my DT. Its amazing to see all the "critters" that come off a small frag! If you need anything dont hesitate to ask.

Unkelj, thats great news man have all the acros responded well and healed up?

I still have some red bugs in my tank but the corals I dipped Bayer a couple weeks ago are doing well. I thought the redbugs would move back on them but so far haven't . I'm sure eventually they will but thought it interesting. Still have some on other corals that are too hard to take out of the tank so waiting on the interceptor for those.
