Sept. meeting/snorkeling trip

Right now, and for the last week, there has been real bad red tide up here in Sarasota. There are piles of rotting fish, the bay is brown and the red tide smell and rotting fish smell is overpowering. I know it could clear up in 2 weeks, and it could, so lets keep an eye out for that. We may have to have a "plan B" if the red tide and weather dont cooperate. I had talked to Agu about the rocks in my tank that I made, and said I would do a show and tell sometime and make some more. I dont have the stuff yet to do it, but could get it at a moments notice-OK a days notice. I'll keep you informed, Steve.

On another note, the anthelia I got from James, came back to life the next day, its just as big and stands up, so I suppose it was just shocked from moving, cutting and glueing. How are the zoa frags doing? Mine are reproducing quite quickly. Just went out to New Pass and the bay in that area, and the water is brown, floating dead fish and bad smell. I talked to a fishing guide and he said its not bad way North, but in Sarasota, its real bad.

The frags are doing great in my tank. i glued them and they came out the next day. They are strecthing up towards the light. The blenny is also getting around in the tank. It just sits and chills on what ever gets in its way. I see the starfish when i drop food to the bottom of the tank. it will rush out and snag it and head back into its hole.

Mote marine site has a red tide site under environmental. The red tide isn't working, but under the beach site click on the beaches to show Respiratory irritation and dead fish. I was hoping the tropical storm would get rid of the red tide, obviously it was a afternoon thunderstorm for us.

Oh Barry I got your PM. I am at work out at St Armands Circle on Lido Beach, and it stinks anywhere near the water. I havent looked at any sites yet, but it definetly is bad now, and might not be good snorkeling even if it were to suddenly blow away. But it could so, we'll keep checking. I might go out there in the boat a day or so ahead of that day, and see if its OK. We have a boat at work too and get out in the Gulf, I could check then too. We keep it at Mote and right now behind Mote its very bad.

I was really looking forward to finding a new reef and putting on the SCUBA gear even if it is shallow. I saw the other thread about the Cheato and guess your pulling a double. Hopefully Katie will get cleared to at least snorkel. I haven't had my boat out since early/mid July. I'm going NUTS!!!

Yep, I have a stinky feeling the Redtide is going to linger. But we can keep an eye on it. This month is getting crazy, but if the snorkel does not take place and someone has other ideas for a meeting post it up and I will get emails out...

At high tide this morning, which should have been the clearest, it was very nasty out here on Lido. The water is very dark brown, stinks, and has tons of floating dead fish. Just about gags you. I dont think its gonna happen.

Thanks for the update Steve, I have heard that it is real bad. My folks live not far from the intercoastal and they are complaing about respiratory issues. We dop apprciate your offer though and hopefully will be able to do this trip sometime.
On that note would anyone like to host Sept. Meeting...This is looking like a very busy month for us, but if someone can do it let me know and I will send out an email...
