September Meeting

Kevin, yeah we still live in the same place. My parents are actually building a house behind us.

cbicop, I be looking forward to meeting you. I don't think I have yet.

Chris, HECK YEAH, they all intrest me. I'd be more than happy with any of those. Well, maybe just a little bit of Xenia (not 10lbs worth). I know how it spreads. :) Good luck with that surgery. If you don't feel like coming I understand completely. I was having what I thought was serious sinus headaches earlier this year almost every night. Turns out it was my wisdom teeth. Had them pulled and haven't had a bad headache since.

Thanks guys. I don't expect it to be too bad. This will be my fifth sinus procedure this year so I'm kinda getting used to it. My doctor said my head was a mess, Like we didn't already know that.... :)

Mike. I'll start getting you some frags together. I have a yellow turbinaria frag I forgot too.

Gary. I'll frag you a birdsnest too.

:D I thought you had already had at least one this year. I'm suffering from what appears to be the onset of an infection right now. Anytime the weather changes, I get them... Mid 90's last week and mid 80's this week is more than it usually takes. I'm thinking about having the sinus zapping surgery soon (electrodes burn off tissue, reducing the swollen sinus tissue). I know I'd likely have to have repeat surgeries, but if I could breathe normally for two weeks, it would be worth it... It makes one wonder if Nashville is the place to live with migraines and continuous sinus/allergy issues (Nashville is ranked pretty high in terms of reported issues for both problems).

Chris, I have a yellow turbinaria already. It and a pinkish turbinaria seemed unaffected by whatever killed off everything else.

Are you open to just any type of acros? I've got a few in mind that I don't think you have... I've only got a few I can frag right now, so those are the ones in mind:).

If somebody could bring me one acro....only one small one...I would greatly appreciate it...I think things are okay now...dealing with cyano and hair...but the other problems are gone now. I have a Kole tang in there doing well too. THe only SPS that survived was a big chunk of fishdocs green monti...although it is not green at the moment...LOL.

Yeah guys, don't bring all that stuff just for me. Kevin had some bad luck and could use some frags. My tank is actually looking not too bad now that I got it straitened out and got a few new corals so I don't really need too much. Kevin, I actually have an acro frag you could have if you want it. I'm not sure what kind it is and it is pretty much brown but you are welcome to it. It survived all my problems along with the mother colony.

How does BBQ sandwiches sound to everybody? The tanks really aren't much to look at now though. I could just tape an old picture on the front of the tank and we could pretend it still looked like that. :) You guys really don"t have to bring any frags but I wouldn't turn them down. ;)

I wish I could make the meeting, but very busy this weekend. I will donate a couple of frags though if you want to come get them sometime. I got a ton of Kenya Trees and a branching frogspawn. If you want a piece of the frogspawn, it will need fragging soon, but I have not done one before. Would need help with it.

Let me know

Robert

Sounds good to me. Gotta go and get ready. This has been an unusually long week at work (even though it was only 4 days) so I didn't get as much done as I wanted to. We are working where they are building the new hospital in Clarksville and I got home about 9 last night.

Thanks to all of you who came. A really big thanks to Gary and Chris for the frags. They are really nice and if you guys ever need anything just let me know. If it wasn't for the people in this reef club I think I would have given up long ago.

Hey Michael....

Thanks for hosting the meeting last night. The food and hospitality was great.

I think we all were impressed by the wave action you created in your tank....the animals seem to really love it.

Thank you (and your wife) for having us into your home.

P.S. And thanks for the shrooms!

Yeah, thanks to Mike and Annette on the meeting. The food and conversation was great. I'm going to have to work on some sort of wave maker like that. I really liked the wave action. thanks also for the Pavona frags. I've got four types now (with the three from last night;)).

OK.. so missing out on the meeting, I am hearing all about this wave maker thing you have mike. Can you please give a few details on it?

Okay, here is where I got the idea. http://ealex.aqua-web.org/wavebox/index.htm I basically took a little giant pump (can't remember what size but I think it is the 500 gal./hour or so pump) and took off the impeller. I glued a carbon fiber shaft over the impeller shaft and glued a RC boat prop on the end. I then made the box out of acrylic. I have a topoff switch like the top one here controlling it. http://www.championlighting.com/home.php?cat=388 I had to take it apart and wire it backward so it came on when the water level rose and went off when the water level fell. I just noticed the one on the bottom of the page which looks like it is already wired correctly for this application. This switch lets the water level fluctuate 3 or so inches so it works with only one switch. I put the switch in the box and had to move it up and down to tune it. I also put a small ball valve on the tube to fine tune it a little better. Basically the pump comes on and pumps a few inches of water out of the box until the switch trips and cuts the pump off. The water flows back into the box and when the water level rises it trips the switch and the pump kicks back on. You have to get it timed right so as the wave is bouncing off the side of the tank with the wavebox the pump comes back on. It took some tinkering but it works pretty well. I already had these things lying around so I just used what I had. I had it running for several months about a year ago but I took it down. I have had it going for a few weeks this time and it is still going strong. I can't guarantee how long it will last though. It only cost probably a little over $100 to build if I had to buy the stuff. I'll try to get some pictures later, it is pretty simple but is hard to describe.

Very cool mike. How much does evaporation affect performance (if any)? I'm very interested in putting one of these together. Those were some beautiful backround vocals as well.
