how would i know melev? lots of people didn't know they had them.

Based on some of the threads posted here and the images Weatherson posted, you should know what to look for and study your corals closely to see if your tank has them.

From your posts in the last 60 days, I think you are more worried about getting them rather than actually having them in your tank already. You haven't posted significant losses, after all.

Lunch

If I could do it again you know what???? I would buy all dead rock! Or Reefer Rocks or Hirocks.

I bought some from Reefer Rocks from that Capt dude and his stuff is amazing.. I gave it to my friend Ross, since my 120gal isn't coming anytime soon. This is stuff looks better then any LR I have ever seen.

At least you will be postive no foreign algae or parasite will enter your system.

All new frags you cut the plugs off and treat.

Also keep this in your head..

When you go to Travis's house do you say "WOW he has beautiful LR" ???? No you don't you look at his corals. LR offers a place to put them.

Don't rush, Take your new LR or Dead rock or HIrock and but it in a bucket with a shrimp make it cycle.

Lunch you have a plan now run with it. Oh and maybe upgrade to a 75gal :) Please

Forgot one more thing Starboard???? Now were talking:)

Dude you got to reconsider...... if anybody should get out of the hobby I should! Check out these threads from me..... Oh by the way I am still going at it stronger than ever!!!!

Hope you stay in it... if it means as much to you as it does me it is well worth the risk...... all your worries can be taken care of with preventative measures...... coral dips, quarantine.... will take care of 99% of all red bugs or AEFW problems...... Good Luck. Oh by the way I voted "ARE YOU ON CRACK?" LOL!

Hey Lunch, I think you really need to get out and fast, so send your system to me, I'll take good care of it!

melev - i didn't see any signs (untill last week) other than a little lightening but i did start Prodibio and i was feeding light. one coral just decided to start receeding from the base up last week. i have looked at it w/ a flashlight at night and some during the day but i haven't studied it well enough to make a conclusion i don't think. i'll get to looking at it more. only this one piece is haveing any issues. my wild colony i got on March 20th was the last piece i added. not sure how long it would take to notice and infestation even if i had them. the wild colony is quite light but that is to be expected IMO for a wild colony. i'll have to keep an eye out just in case

arconom - you'd use dead rock? hmmm...i'll check in to it but my buddy (LFS) has some nice rock that has been cookign for quite some time. sorry buddy but there won't be an upgrade till we move...IF then. i'm thinking the 58gal is gonna stay the reef and we will add a big FOWLR tied into the same system IF we would upgrade down the road

marine_freak - LOTS of people have had a ton of stuff go wrong and have battled back from it bigger and better than ever. i haven't gone through anything compared to most but just frazzled at the moment.

jdieck - i couldn't send them to you...i wouldn't feel right about burdening you like that :P

Lunchbucket

jeffie - thanks man. hmm reefer rocks as a base huh.

so if i use 90% or so of reefer rocks how will i get enough life in the rock to add my fish and corals back in an acceptable time frame? i can't just set it up one weekend and add the fish back in...would be too much for the system right? or am i just over cautious?

Lunchbucket

Remember that dry rock is just like base rock. It will take months to re-establish as live rock (probably close to 6 months before it will work at 100% efficiency), so you'd need to seed it with a decent amount to keep up with your bioload. At first, it'll just look good but won't do anything for your tank.

If you get a chance, go back to the TCMAS thread.... It's growing about the topic.

I would do about 75% reefer rocks and 25% new live rock to seed the reefer rock....

Very true Marc. Also I would not use any of your Current LR to seed the new LR. I would use the excess time while it's cycling to plan your new setup.

Use the Shrimp method. Don't contaminate the new stuff with possible Algae spores.

Question, does acropora eating flatworm eggs get deposited on something other than the corals? I have seen them only on the coral itself usually underneath or in protected dark parts of it.
I might be questioning if it will be really ncessary to trat the rock.
I would think that for improving survival chances the worm will lay eggs were the food is, not anywhere else.
Now having said that I think there will always be the chance of eggs getting on the loose and float to other corals or lay on the rock for the purpose of expanding the species... Humm I think I answered myself.

melev - yeah i figured it would take quite a while to get the life back in and and run efficiently. wonder if i put it in the LR bins of a budds LFS if that would do it quicker....i guess that could get it exsposed to nasties too

Jeffie - will do i'll check out over there.l hmm 75% and 25%. anyone have ideas on how many lbs of LR total i should have in my 58gal? i've never been good on guessing LR lbs.

arconom - i'm planning on dryinug out the current LR and saving it for a bigger set up down the road. not sure what else i should do to it to kill all the stuff. i would seed the reeferrocks w/ soem nice LR from a buddy in town. no need to expose it to some algae spores

Lunchbucket

so what is the ideas for substrate? i like the look of sand but i vaccuum it now to keep it clean. i'm thinking white starboard. anyone give suggestions? i would use a 12x18 and a 24x18 piece of starboard so i can remove it easily. then i can vaccuum any detritus as needed pretty easily. anyone know the cheapest place to get starboard??

Lunchbucket

Hey Lunch,
I posted this in another thread for you, but I guess it got lost.

I think many have used the ones from the cuttingboard company successfully. However, I wanted to sleep better at night because of the UV issue so I went with Marinaboard (similar to Starboard):

http://thecuttingboardfactory.com/M...Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=TCBF&Category_Code=4MB

I bought the 1/4" white to save a few bucks. PLUS, I was able to fit a full size piece in my 65g (36x18). These guys do custom cuts at little to no cost IIRC. If you want to get starboard locally, I hear that boating stores carry it too.

BTW, I also think that you're on crack. I think you need a refresher at the Idol tank thread:
http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=667312

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

me and my brother (kozmo02) waited years to finally set-up our 180, spent several thousand dollars to do so, and just when it's ready to go all these pests start sweeping through the hobby: red bugs, acro flatworms, etc.

All we have in the tank is stuff we've had for years and haven't been able to add anything new, nor do we even want to risk it. It sucks...really takes the fun out of it.

Hey Lunch (I don't know if it's been mentioned in the thread), but why not just go directly on glass? I know you like the white look of starboard, but in time that'll get covered in coralline algae anyways.
