Lunchbucket, some of the interest is lost after looking at the same aquascape for a long time.
Trim as needed, rearrange the rock for a totally different look and you will see what I mean.

I have to agree, i myself have found my tank boring at time's and compleatly re-arrange it, most time for the better :) and i find myself staring for days... there is something in my tank that be done!!! it never ends. If not there is a new mod that i can do that will keep me busy... and if that doesnt work its time to get a BIGGER tank!!!

reaquascaping is a good idea but nto the solution IMO. i'm a set it and leave it guy and i love seeing the progress the corals make day after day or month after month. w/ a new aquascape it would be like starting over (the whole idea) but then i've lost all my progress from where they have come. maybe i'm thinking differently.

sad thing is i haven't thought about the tank the last couple days much. work has kept me busy so no decisions yet. still feeding the fish, cleaned the glass, topped off water, cleaned skimmer, checked ca rx...so there is no lack of tending to the tank (thank God)...just no thoughts about it. maybe if i keep doing this the good thoughts will come back around when it is 30below zero in the South Dakota winters and my tank makes me think of a tropical place????

It really helps when the tank is doing well. I really don't like doing water tests because then I know what the parameters are and what I have to fix. Today's test results were perfect for once, so I don't have to do a thing. :)

Thanks Shawn,

Did a little reading on the Aeolidia species. They do in fact consume anemones. Problem is, there are MANY kinds of Aeolidia as there are hydroids. Some (most) of the sea slugs are very particular about the type of anemone they will eat, so is there a particular family of these (like papillosa) that consume the type of hydroid in our tanks?

I'm not trying to be rude, just would like to know.

I want to know too as I have the same problem.

Alberto

like easttn said there are many types of hydroids so it would be hard to find a match. i have never heard of any luck. i've asked Dr. Ron and a few others.

dgasmd - you have hydroids?

Pest's on your Live Rock?
NO PROBLEM!

Nice Mac..........I've used a soldering pen. Seems to do the trick also. It helps nailing pests that are close to the corals without harming the coral base............most specifically hydroids.

what I have come across in the hobby is that when people take down there tanks and get rid of everything they will more then likely come back to the hobby and A. spend more money B. want the coral that they once had back and are not able to find that one coral. what I would suggest is to down size the tank focus on just the coral that you like the most and that way you will have it when you get back into SPS or just get rid of the smaller tank.

Jeez, I can't believe anyone hasn't said this already (or maybe I didn't read all of the threads thoroughly): Get another tank for LPS and fish :D You can never have too many tanks in this hobby.

my yellow eye kole tang died today :( not sure why but he wasn't looking as healthy lately. been showing some wierd spots and possibly some ICH. his immune system was not functioning right or something or some stress got him. he had NO ICH the whoel time i got him till now just under 1yr.

i'd like to replace him w/ something as he was my "show fish". i'm thinking copperband butterfly, or a flame angel, or a foxface.

copperband i've had bad luck w/ them being shipped to me. they wouldn't eat then the one that did died mysteriously over night w/ a patch of something on it's side :(

flame..i'm worried it would nip at my SPS.

foxface - to keep the algae down. i had one quite a while ago but got rid of it because it nipped my clams :( great algae eater and a crazy pooper !!

hmm...my tang nipped at my clams and that is the reason i got rid of them....no fish to nip on them now...maybe i should get back into clams!

ReeferMac and epon - those won't work. there are too many of the hydroids around and they are on teh glass and some on the sand too :(

i have no room for another tank. and my electric panel won't handle more :D

well i'm leaning more towards getting rid of all my rock for fresh hydriod and bryopsis free rock. i don't want to buck up the cost though :( i would then remove all my sps w/ a dremel (disc to cut them and their incrustation off of the rock) and other tools. i would drain the tank clean all the bryopsis and hydroids out. clean all the pumps and pluming too. possibly thinking of doing starboard bottom so i don't have to siphon the sand all the time :( just he detritus out. i would treat ALL my sps w/ levamasole while i was cleaning up the tank and components so i know i don't have the nasty AEFW's (not sure if i don now or not). then set everything back up in 4wks w/ fresh rock (cured and cooked at my LFS for months), starboard and NO hydroids, bryopsis, or AEFW's.

i think the only thing stopping me is the cost of the rock and tearing everything apart :(

just some thoughts i'm throwing around.

I've been doing the best I can to keep my SPS Tank alive while I get through this intense feeling of simply not caring about the whole thing.
Yes it's the AEFW's (I think) that caused this attitude.
One of my two Efflo's is almost gone, and last time I looked at it, I saw bugs all over it.
I've got some beautiful pieces in my tank, I'm just tired of losing them one by one.

Never tried any of the cures, I thought they were all in experimental stages still. Maybe it's time to do some reading.

WHat is AEFW's?

If you do end up selling your OM 4-way I ma interested in it. I am in the process of designing and putting together all the stuff I will need for a 200G tank I will be building into my house I am fixing to build.

Lunch,

I think your mind is made, you just need a spotter to get you over that next plateau.

If you have a TSC (Tractor Supply Company) near you, go get one of their feed troughs <$100 for 100G. Plumb it and place all your rock in your tank water with a skimmer. Cook your rock through winter. When spring arrives in ND (around now :D) next year see if your heart is back in it.

Hardest part is cracking the SPS off their bases and parting with your fish. JDI. Give them to a trusted reefer without the known common afflictions, agree on a size and have them clip a piece for the rental. If/when you come back, you get the mother back. If not then win/win.

Keep your LR in the dark; skim, change water around every 60 days, and plug in a 300W heater set at 60. Be ugly to the rock when you do your water changes, shake off all detritus, and kill any hydroids as you go. Leave it all winter, your next tank will be as stunning as Arnold in 76-80. :D

Why are you siphoning your sand, Eric?

I think you'd know if you had acropora eating flatworms.

easttn - not sure if i'm out. if i stay i have a lot of work ahead of me....but i might have some renews spirit...just dont' want to shell out the $$ for rock :(

scarletknight - thanks!

melev - to get the detritus out of it if there is any. po4 and other nasties can't accumulate. it is less then 1" thick

how would i know melev? lots of people didn't know they had them.

need to get a quote on LR and need to find a cheap place for starboard (anyone have one!!) and i'll put some numbers together
