Seriously!!!!! on Diver's Den

First off...the Titan Triggerfish on Diver's Den is amazing. While Nacho is my boy/girl that fish is awesome. I hope it gets a great home.

Secondly.. Seriously!!!! Shouldn't LA and DD at least take a stand for whats right in this hobby. Most consider them the top of the list for fish care and ethical treatment. They are actually selling a Bumble Bee Grouper!!! Those monsters reach 6 feet and big around as an oil drum. Is there even a single private aquarium out there that can house that fish???

I find it interesting that they recommend only a 1000 gallon tank for them..

This goes in the "not for home aquariums" category. I find it strange that LA would even stock something like this.

maybe someone that is interested can keep it for a couple of years then try to dish it out to a public aquarium.

Banking on a public aquarium is always a bad idea.

There are very places that could take it, but someone will buy it eventually. Weird thing to me is that a pubic institution would probably buy it wholesale or even collect themselves.

I see nothing wrong with stocking these. There are people who have tanks large enough for them. They are right for some people and not others. I don't think its DD job to police that.

They carry many things that is not for the "general population". Cold water fish, venomous fish, large fish, fish with special diets, fish that are just plain crazy. It's our job to decide if we have the right setup, not theirs.

You actually know someone who has a tank that can take care of a fish the size of a 55 gallon oil drum?

While I do not feel most of the mom and pop places, who actually know less than anyone on this webiste, are not aware enough to be responsible.. I disagree that a company like LA/DD should not do whats right for the hobby and the fish they sell. They should set the standard and not just sell a fish to make a few bucks.

My issue is that by supplying demand, LA/DD is leading to more of these fish being taken and offered on the market, which will lead to more of them not being in an appropriate environment. They have offered Threadfin Lookdowns on a couple occasions, and have explicitly mentioned that those fish should only be purchased by institutions or public aquaria.

Hmmm... they aren't supplying "demand"... demand comes from the buyer.

They are supplying "supply"...

One bb grouper posted on Live Aquaria is not going to increase the demand for those large fish... They arent pretty and they get huge, which is obvious from DD's page.

I'm pretty sure LiveAquaria doesnt ask specifically for every single fish they receive in a wholesale order. They get an order in from a region and it contains tons of different fish, mostly what they asked for but sometimes not. Most likely, they didnt specifically order a bumblebee grouper but it showed up in the order and so they sell it off. The other option is destroy it so it isnt sold to a hobbyist, which if it was me, I'd rather live in a small tank than just be killed outright.

If it was something they regularly supplied, I might have an issue with it even though like Renee said, it isnt Live Aquaria's job to only stock fish for people with a 55g tank. They stock what they want, the end user can determine if they want it or not.

Just because you do not know somebody with an aquarium large enough for this fish doesn't mean they are not out there. I know of 5 people personally that buy from Liveaquaria that have aquariums in excess of 20,000 gallons. Foster and Smith and Liveaquaria would not sell one of these fish without asking questions first. This company is the best there is, period, and I, for one, will always give them the benefit of the doubt. They have earned it.

I find it amusing that you would get all up in arms over this relatively rare occurrence. There are a very, very small number of juvenile grouper fish imported annually for the aquarium industry. Do you voice the same opinions about the hundreds of thousands of adult breeding sized groupers that are killed each year for the food fisheries?

How many LFS sell "Dory" to put in 55 gallon tanks? Live Aquaria is perhaps the most ethical vendor I am aware of with regard to recommended tank sizes. Also, while I am not a fan of Titan Trigger fish, having been chased by a few for a 100 yards or more, they are fascinating fish in large aquaria. Many people keep fish that are too large for the environment that they provide. Blaming Live Aquaria for that makes no sense whatsoever. Do you really want every vendor to police what the aquarist purchases?

I live in Los Angeles.... it's a very grandious city.

And that fish won't reach that size. We barely feed our fish well enough for them to grow to the minimum of their size limit.

People make bad purchases every single day, we don't kabosh those items. I guess I'm one of those that think the buyer is responsible for their own decisons and validity of their research, as appropriate or inappropiate as I may think it is.

I don't want the standard, that's why I have awesome fish.... hence why I made many purchases form DD. But I don't want someone else limiting my collection because they think they have a say in what I should and should not keep. Let me decide that and deal with the consequences.

I know of one person as well now that I think about it. He had it in a 20k plus tank and when it ate a couple fish it got sent to one of his 2k gallon sumps. There are people out there that can house them. Monsterfishkeepers.com someone said has people that have huge shark pools.

I also agree, they only post 2 or 3 of these a year, not a ton of people buying them. Definitely other things to worry about.

I do see everyones point but I am not on the side of the seller having zero liability on the issue when dealing with a living creature. If the sellers wished to make an impact they could police what they sell.

But... Then again it is a fish and fish are caught and eaten by the millions everyday.

I have seen several tanks on monsterfishkeepers.com that are big enough to house this fish. So just because you don't know anyone with a big enough tank doesn't mean they don't exist.
