set up for over 1 1/2yrs

I have had my 56g tank set up in my office for a little of yr and ahalf, all I have in it is around 100#of LR in tank and sump. I would like to set it up for a octo(bimac). How should I cover up the overflow(screen?) and what do people do about their returns? My water per. are pretty good as I used tank for awhile to breed rose anemones. I cant sit in the office and look at rocks anymore.
