Setting up 240

I currently have a 75 g with zoos, softies, xenia and a few fish. I just got a 240. Any advice on how to go from the 75 to the 240? I have about 50 lbs of live rock and need a lot more. The 240 will be a reef tank with a mixture of softies, fish and I will try some sps. I have 3 400w mh and 2 vho actinics.

Should I set up the 240 independantly of the 75 and get it running with some live rock or should I transfer the 75 to the 240?

Hi Sal, Welcome and congrats.

I am doing a similiar upgrade, combining several smaller tanks into a 375.

I will tell you that it has already taken me 2+ months and I STILL have a 90g set up with extra rock, a few corals and a moray.

There are lots of things to get up and running, and worked out in general, and I'm glad I'm taking it slow, and glad I have the "extra" tank setup so I can go back and forth as needed.

My advice would be set up the new one completely independently and when stable and set up the way you like, start moving over.

Another thing I'll pass on is reeferrocks.com, I ordered over 300lbs of shelf base rock from him and he's awesome to deal with and the pieces were huge (he sends pics, so you can pick only what you want) Im glad I have all these big pieces (I had about 200lbs of live before this came) to help aquascape. Scaping is taking quite a while for me, but as I said, I'm in no rush.(another reason its nice to have the extra tank)

Thanks for the advice. Was the rock live? Was there any life on it or is it dry? How did he ship? This looks like a good deal because I need a lot of rock.

dry base rock. cost about $2/lb shipped.

like i said, only nice shelf pieces.

i have been working on my 300 for about 9 months so far. its not something that just jumps together.

do alot of planning and take your time.

last thing you want to do is rush this.

That's important, and worth saying again. A very wise man once said that nothing good happens fast in a reef. Build it right the first time to avoid the trouble of having to do it again.

I am cresting over a year putting together my 180. I am just finishing the fish room basics like walls & plumbing/electrical. During the course of the year I have been reading alot of post here on RC & buying used equipment at the right price, no rushing to buy it at too high of a price because you need to have it syndrome.
