Setting up 300g in Manchester

orthokardia

New member
:wavehand::wavehand:I am setting up a my tank again. I went with the foam and rock aquascaping, but it is yet to be put in th tank. I am running one closed loop and a differential dump system that will be skimmer fed. I will be completing the setup over the next week or so. My fish and corals really need a new home. If anyone is close to Manchester and got some time I could use a little help and advice. It would also be nice to get to know some local reefers. I can pay in homebrew or good will.
thanks, bart

Hi back at you. I am not close but just wanted to say hi!!! I am sure there are plenty of experienced people that will have great advice...unfortunately I am still relatively new and learning myself.

Bart I might be able to swing by and help. I used to live in Manchester so I know it pretty good. I'll aleast least share what knowledge I have. PM sent.

I wish I were closer to you so I could have helped in this huge build cause it seems like fun...

Keep us posted on your progress... Cant wait to see what it looks like finished...

Wayne is a real good person to go to for help cause he definitely has experience with big tanks lol...

Plus he makes good fries lol....

wow! what a great response. i am very curious about the fries!
Manchester is about half way between nashville and chatty on I24. I live off of exit 105 about 4 miles. Where can i find this Wyane with the fries?

I'm down here in your neck of the woods in Tullahoma. Unfortunately, I'm pretty new to this but I'd be happy to help any way I can. I'm still working on getting my 180 up and running.

Well my progress has been quite slow. I had a build thread going that I plan to resurrect pretty soon hopefully. Here's the link http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1592807
Since I've updated that thread, I've gotten the sump built and all plumbed up. I have the sand and live rock in the tank and fuge also. I just ordered and received my new lights so hopefully I'll get started on the canopy soon so I can actually start stocking some coral in there.

I live off hwy 70 4 miles out of Mboro toward Woodbury if you are in the boro call me 4283262 and we can get together and talk. I would come down sometime but things for the next two weeks are crazy.

does anyone know if it is a good or bad idea to run an external pump directly off the overflow water i.e. no sump. i do plan on having a sump, but it will be above the tank so the critters don't get the ax before they become food. important note (i love japanese dining because they cut the steak into bite size piecec for me)...... how could i keep the intake clean and free of obstruction?

It sounds like you are dscribing a closed loop which many folks run. Also, are you worried about pods getting destroyed going through the return pump?

i have never seen an overflow feeding a return pump direct, but then i have not seen that much. yes to the pods. do corals like pod smoothies? or would they like to chew their steak still mow'n

The foam wall going in. The panels were 24" wide and 30" tall and heavy! I found 1/2" pvc good for holding it in place while it dries as the will flex and do not scratch the glass.

I don't think a return pump connected directly to the overflow will work. You will get tons of air bubbles. You will also have to top off everyday because even a small amount of evaporation will cause the pump to suck air since there is no extra water in the system.

The closed loop Tim is referring to is not connected to the overflow. A separate pump is connected to two or more bulkheads, usually in the back of the tank to circulate water in a closed loop.

some more pics of the build. the foam rock wall is attached with foam to the back wall.

the aquascape still needs work, but i am still fiddling with the flow.
