Setting up my first 80 gallon soon. I'll be following your progress.
For you guys suggesting egg crate; is that to protect the bottom glass and won't that make it difficult to stir the little particles (and detrius later) out of the sand?
I think the egg crate helps in the event you get a sand sifter at some point, he can't burrow under and collapse your rock if your not putting rock directly on bottom

You are correct on trapping detritus. But with egg crate that is only underneath the rocks to provide that stability it will not be trapping and detritus. There is no way for it to get trapped in there since its under the rock.
I do not recommend using eggcrate on the bottom of the entire tank, just under the main rocks to prevent shifting / movement / collapse from different animals that may inhabit the tank.
I understand what you are saying but rock is not perfectly flat and can't make a tight seal so the crapola will find a way to escape flow.
My skimmer and pump rest on egg crate but I remove them once a week.

I feel like you are going to have just as much trapped around the rock / under the rock if you placed it just on the glass. There is always somewhere where the crap will get stuck that we cant get at it. Adding some eggcrate under a few base rocks specifically cut to their shape certainly cannot add so much more to this as to create a nitrate factory.
But this is the main argument between the two sides. So all we can do is provide the information and let them decide for their tank.
