Setting up a 9010 Skimmer

Quick question. I just received my 9010 Skimmer and plan on using it in my refugium. Using it this way, is it mandatory to set it up with the water output pipe and sponge? Or, would it be OK to simply allow the water to return via the opening? I ask because I am really tight for space in this chamber of the fuge. Thanks for the help.

You can install it either way, just keep in mind that without the outlet pipe the water level must be fairly constant at the blue water line marked at the box, it can be up to 1" below it but should not go above it.
