I am still new as well, but I would say get 1.5 lbs of live rock per gallon of water. I would get uncured live rock so your beneficial bacteria can cycle the tank. It will smell and make things dirty, but big chunks can be siphoned out. Also I have a sand bed and I think it was like 15 or 20 lbs. By the way, I have a 14 gallon BioCube. I would check on the water parameters every few days to see where you are at. Then when they numbers start to go down, do a large water change. After you get low or zero numbers then you can get a clean up crew of snails and crabs.
Be very patient and let things take their course. Nothing can be rushed or else you will have disastrous consequences.
Good luck.
