Setting up new tank tonight

I am picking up a Solana tonight and plan on setting up. I've got one question that I want to check on first. Am I able to use all new made water at perfect levels and transfer all my rock/fish/corals into it without the tank recycling or should I use the current water I have? From my understanding it is the rock that needs to cycle (which mine has been established for a year) so I am not worried about it. I just wanted to make sure using all new water wouldn't be a drastic mistake. Thanks in advance for the answers!

All new water wouldn't be too big of a deal. You're correct on the rock part. If you used all new water the only trouble would be that you would need to acclimate your corals and fish...then again you'ld have to do the same thing if you used 1/2 and 1/2.

I would not transfer your sand or crushed coral - this will definately cause a cycle. Use new sand and add a handful of your old sand to seed it.

sand

sand

Thanks for the replys. Which sand do you recommend. Right now we have Fiji Pink (have an extra bag) but like the look of Oolite too. What does everyone else like.

50/50 should work just fine ,,,, might still have a little bloom of algae but not as bad as all new water

Not to hijack, but I'm in the planning phase of upgrading from 75 to 125 and I was planning on transferring the existing sand over. Is this a bad idea? What about all the critters living in the existing sand?
Thanks,
John

I think transferring all of your sand is a bad idea, because of the garbage that would be released into the system. I took my sand out yesterday and even with a huge CUC I still had some stinky stuff in there. Keep some of it, but rinse the rest and then reuse.

ahhhhhh could be a bad thing , i would just flat out replace it !! used a couple cups of your old sand , lots of "bad stuff" builds up in sand beds and when you try to re-use it , it can make your nitrates off the chart for some time . i did i one time and will never do it again . i just went from 72 gal to 200 and i replaced all my sand , and used 50 /50 old water and new , held the bloom down a lot !! but still going through it right now , it looks to be almost done.

Is there any harm by using some live sand that was sitting around in a bucket for a while?

I would rinse it.

Since you are only trying to fill a 34g tank and have rock and sand taking up some of the volume you will only need about 25 gallons of water. I would suggest filling the entire tank from your existing 75g and just adding the new water to your 75g (33% water change)
The items in your 75g are established and will appreciate the water change. The items going into your non-established Solana will appreciate the water being the same (dirty) stuff they came from and will be less stressed in the move. If you wait a couple weeks until you see how things recover after the move you can judge how much of a water change to do at that point and you may have better luck.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the response again. I am actually tearing down the 75, so what doesn't go into my Solana is going into my 20g for temp storage. I am selling all the equipment that I have on the 75, but I got wrist slapped for stating it in another thread. If anyone needs equipment, PM me and I will let you know what I have.
