I think it's worth the experiment. The cyclone is forced by a vaccum vs. the result of a gravity fed inlet. Also, dynamics in water are different than air.

It might still work. Go for it and let us know how it works?

It's a project that rattling around in my head. For fish tanks and another application I'd like to use the same concept for.

My refugium kind of works as sedimentation filter, though that's not really the purpose, but rather a side effect. It has no pump and the inflow (gentle to begin with) goes into a Chaetomorpha lump that breaks the flow to next to nothing.
