setup ideas

So I am strongly thinking about setting up (2) 40gallon breeder tanks for frag tanks. 1 lps and 1 sps. I am not looking at breaking the bank for the setups and would most likely be shopping around for used items for the setups. I have a 30" power compact jbj light I can use over the lps tank but I was not sure about the sps tank. I was thinking about trying metal halide. I have only ever used t5 and would like to try something different. The expense of led kind of pushes me to metal halide. Since I have never used metal halide I am looking for a little advice on what a setup might look like for a 40g sps frag tank.

I thought about the led's but I really only care about growth as it will be a frag tank and I just seem to find mixed reviews about led and great growth. The metal halides just seem proven. I was thinking (1) 150w MH and maybe 2 T5 actinics. I don't know if that would really be enough or not?

For a 40 breeder that would be fine. I prefer the 250 radium with m80 ballast. I would also probable skip the t5 if I did the 250. With a 150 mh I would supplement with t5 as you described.

40 breeder? XR15pro!!! $400 Done.....play with lighting all you want....experiment. Cost of bulbs to do just that 1 feature?
or 2 AI Primes for $400

Who wants to play with leds and try to find optimum growth when you can spend less than 330 and have a proven setup that will outgrow any led rig. 250w Radium on an m80 ballast gives great growth and excellent color.

For you to say that it will out grow any LED rig is talking trash. Unless youve tried ALL LED rigs yourself you can't really speak from experience.

Hell, just go to the sps forums and look at some of the tanks grown under LEDs.

I have seen enough evidence from personal experience and the experience of many other users to make that claim. I am not claiming leds do not promote growth; however, it is my opinion that they do not grow coral as well as MH.

Who want's to spend $330 and then continue to spend $ on bulbs after that?

.....MH might be "proven" for performance......but show me where someone "proved" it will outgrow LEDs.......you can't.
Some corals grow better under certain lights.
So unless you're going to get specific about what coral grows better under MH and will "outgrow" LED, then you might want to state your claims as opinion and not fact.

I quoted myself for your reading convienence. I stated that it was my opinion formed from mine and others experience.
