Shallow Rimless Tank?

Bah.. I might be getting a new tank.:spin2::spin2::spin2: I'm having trouble figuring out what I want.. (I'm sure y'all have been there before)

Anyway.. there's a possibility of picking up a 72in x 24in x 12in height Rimless tank. It's essentially the bottom (or top?) half of a 180 gallon tank, and comes in right at 90 gallons.

The tank has many possibilities, and I'm very excited that I could have a decent amount of fish that actually swim (unlike my clowns and firefish, lol). In addition, I'm very excited about being able to hang a pendant over top and using a smaller wattage of light to get a 'dramatic' lighting effect.

In my current cube, it's a bit tough to have SPS/Clams as well as Zoas and Euphyllia in the same general location because of flow/light requirements. I figure with some creative placement I can keep all of the above happy in this tank.

Here are the questions/concerns I have: The first is flow.. how do I get ample flow without blowing sand everywhere? I was thinking closed loop but I'd rather not add more holes to the tank. I feel like Vortechs or Tunzes would be too widespread and would kick sand up. I suppose Penductors would work, but I've never actually used those myself.

The second concern is in regard to the tank height itself.. is it too shallow? I do admit that this is the main reservation I have regarding this tank. I like shallow but I haven't had a tank setup that's this shallow since a 20 long, and although that had a rather large rim over the top...it was a bit too shallow for my tastes.

Thanks for the help/input. I appreciate anyone's ideas being thrown out there.:wavehand:

I think the size is awsome. I have a 16" shallow tank and I think the tunze nanostreams work great. I have 3 of them and don't really move the sand. Its just a matter of proper placement. Good luck.

you could always go for 18" high, would still give you the shallow look and abit more room for things

I have a 36"x24"x16"H Rimless tank and I'm pretty happy with it, But if I could do it over i would go for 20" on the height. Reasons being once you add a sand bed and take an inch away for the water line being below the rim you are only looking at about 8" for water and rock and the rest is pretty clear. At 20" you will have at least 16" to call a tank IMO that will be much better in the long run and you will be much happier with your aquascaping and the overall swimming room for the Fish. Hope this opens your mind to the problems going so shallow.

Thanks for the replies everyone. All were helpful in their own way. I'm actually not ordering this tank; it's something for sale locally, or else I would do something deeper. There are two things swaying me toward the opposite end of your answer, pool, in that I love minimalist scaping which would be easy with the rock I have now. Also, I like the idea if a look down tank with clams and other fun things. It will be less wattage required to provide adequate light.

Lots to ponder.

Here's another question: when stocking this tank, what should I consider in terms if appropriate fish? (not regarding bioload but overall dimensions) ...I don't think a Sohal would be appropriate but would a tang like a powder blue or powder brown work? I'm sure other fish like anthias would like this tank size as well.

I'll throw another shameless question out there.. ;) if I were to light this with 2x Lumenbright 3 mini's (Radiums) would there be sufficient coverage? I realize the ends might be darker and would definitely have less PAR.

Or, what about a 4ft T5 fixture? There would be 1ft on each side overhang. Since the tank is only 12 inches deep, I could hang the fixture pretty high.

I am by all means no expert on this, but a 12" high rimless tank I think would be too shallow for those fish. Like someone already said, by the time you add your substrate and because its rimless you have maybe if your lucky 10" oh water and those fish can get 10".
