Just added sand back to my tank after 8 months battle with SPS fading.

Added 1/2" SD......now I'm dealing with wicked sand storms.....just rinsed some mixed crushed to go over the top of the SD to sit it down.

Guess i'm in the SSB club now....:)

We'll see...

Oh yeah... and a fourth... my 54 corner from a few years ago... notice the little hippo and purple that are now much larger in the 180...

Copps, just beautiful man... gonna get me a regal this summer when i upgrade i hope. already read that regal thread...

Very nice tanks everyone:D

Question...what are you guys using for substrate and how do you maintain it, critters, siphoning etc......?

Also how long, if ever, before you see problems with detritus building up?

thanks, Chris

COPPS...WOW!..(I cant live with myself anymore.....loads gun..shoots self)..That is one AMAZING tank..simply amazing!!

For substrate i used that expensive sand that comes with the water "bacteria" thing..And, i use tons of flow , so, no detritus..

Plain old play sand. Don't remember the brand but it's a ligh brown-white color. Rinsed well. Cost me about $8 for my 155. :D

Critters I think I posted earlier, but here again:

~1000? Cerith snails (breeding)
~50? blue-legged hermits
~15 Astrea snails
~10 Nerite snails
~50 Nassariuns vibex snails
~5 turbo snails

Plus whatever has come in on the live rock. Countless pods, bristleworms, mini-stars, etc.

I don't siphon, no noticeable detritus buildup. Basically takes care of itself.

BTW Chris, I still gotta get some pics of the blue tenuis I got from you, it's put on some good growth and the color is phenomenal. The efflo has put on some growth as well and darkened up, but it's just starting to color up (looks to be purple and green!).

fishdoc,
I have a 1" carib sea sand bed although with the flow there is little to no sand at the front glass, but all the rocks are sitting on sand. No detritus issues so far. Tiger tail cuke, mexican turbos, hawaiian hermits and red hermits -I dont have numbers for the hermits. I dont have alot of them but they are visible thoughout the tank.

hawaiianwargod,
Thanks, your tank is also very amazing.

AlgaeMan,
SSB since Oct of 05'

Great tanks everyone, looks like SSB's are going to be around for a while!

copps...i know you had a writeup on your original smaller system but i'm also curious how you setup the 180...also, noticed a lot of tangs/angels...any aggression problems?
