Shallow Sand Bed reefers, show me your tanks!

Looks good Johnny.......you and Dan and you're 10 gallons *shakes fist*

Well see how my tank does with the new SSB :)

Algea man - current tank has been up for 8 months (solely BB, until now), started from a 2 year old SPS 5.5gallon.

I just added 1/2" southdown, then 1/2" medium grade over than......no mo sand storms :)

Okay here is our big frag tank... (180 AGA)

very nice...sapranos is my favorite show...I love how the new season is going so far....going to be a great season for drama unfolding...

Chris, here are some pics I just took of the tenuis I got from you at the frag swap. The first pic with good PE is blurry (can't take shots at an angle through the water!). It's colored up quite nicely.

Glad to see it's doing well Fred:)

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am just curious as SSB IME tend to fill up after about a year or two and nitrates start rising....then eventually phosphates. Still curious as to maintenance routine, substrate and age on your sandbeds gcarroll and Copps......those are some very nice tanks:D

Here is an older pic of my 90 when it had a SSB:

thanks, Chris

Copps!!! I count three regals!! Wow! I can only aspire to one! What's the secret?!? Incredible tank and fish load. Really nice.

Sidog1: what regal thread?

Thanks

I wonder if you employ the "steve weast" method of vaccuming out some sand 2-3 times a year and replace with fresh, if that wouldn't keep the process in check?

Steve also vacuums his sandbed very often(2 times a week if I remember correctly). That's a lot of work IMO but obviously worth it to him and you can't argue with the results. FWIW I siphoned/cleaned mine once every two weeks and I still couldn't keep detritus from building up under the rocks and eventual nutrient buildup.
Chris

I don't vac the sand like I should. I think like once a year. I do every now and then mix it up w/ the fish net to get the detritus in suspension.

copps...i know you had a writeup on your original smaller system but i'm also curious how you setup the 180...also, noticed a lot of tangs/angels...any aggression problems?

180 display with 125 (6'x2'x17") frag, 40 refugium, 90 sump... 180 has 3 Diamond Lumenarcs with 400 watt 10k XMs supplemented with 5 VHO actinics... 2 Tunze 6100s on a multicontroller with Wavy Sea return from sump... recently added a closed loop Hammerhead on the 180 to add flow... I'm already planning an upgrade to a 500-600 gallon, but that will be a while... very minimal aggression as I don't just use the "dump and hope" approach whena dding things... I fatten and acclimate new specimens seperately for a few weeks or months, and sometimes when adding I place them in containers for a few days so the existing fish could see them without being able to harm them... Oh yeah, and I'm running this system since December of '04... I'll shut up so as to not jack the thread more than I have!:D

Regal Angel Thread
Set aside a day to read it, as it was 40 pages before it split. I originally posted on page 2 two years ago and post throughout. Many people are keeping these these days, and after meeting with Frank Baensch at his Angelfish breeding facility in Hawaii last year it further inspired me. Also met with Rafael at MACNA who has a spawning pair with video here... I go to Guam in Micronesia on business every 9 months or so and witness lots of regals... Bottom line... do something different and your little part to advance the hobby... I seldomly see trios of regals here and there in Guam, so I tried it to see how they react... going on a year and they are fine... with hints at some lovin'!

Nice tanks all around.

Copps, your 180 looks BB to me and snipers looks more DSB. :)

In that photo it does as the lip of the stand comes up above the sandbed partially... and I had the bed littered with frags after my 125 frag tank split at the seams... luckily it was caught within about 20 minutes...

I try to keep it as clean as I can, and sometimes have thoughts of BB... constantly torn between thinking if the awesome look of clean white sand is worth the hassle of keeping it clean...
