Share your maroon experience

Well, I gave my woman my pair of ocellaris clowns to put in her cube, as I was dead set on getting a pair of Black and White Ocellaris clowns. My Live Aquaria experience was a flop and I do not want to go through it again. I watched two clowns struggle to make it and neither of them did. Too much money and hassle.
So, I have been looking into a pair of maroons. I know they are aggressive/semi aggressive. How are they in a reef tank? How are they with tank mates? How hardy are they? Any information would help.
Tossing around the idea. I will not again be spending 60 bux a clown. A bit stupid.

female maroons are large, and territorial. but rather enjoyable and funny too!!
they are totally dedicated moms. Mine threw frags out of her 'spot' and moved all the sand away from her spot (fairly normal)
maroons are sorta... gangsta lol

Yes, the maroons will be large and likely to take your hand off (especially in a small tank).

Phishy had a ton of small black and white oc's in yesterday when I swung by.

How are they towards other tankmates and is pairing them just like any other clowns? Big and mean is what I have read and seen. I have a 120 and figure that would be sufficient for two of them.
I am aggravated about my Live Aquaria deal and it kind of shot my dream of having a pair of B&W clowns. 65 a fish is a bit steep for a clown in my opinion.

Maroons are actually one of hardest to pair, the female is probably one of the largest and nastiest clowns out there. A 120 would be more than sufficient for a pair of maroons. As for aggressiveness towards other fish, other clowns won't last for long at all, and most other fish are safe as long as they respect the maroon's hosting area. If they get up in her face they can expect a nice big headbutt ;)

If you're truly interested in maroons, your absolute best bet is the anemone/clownfish forum here. Let me see if I can find tourkid's pairing thread...

Great reading so far. Thanks Eric.
I would love to have a pair of B&W but I am torn up about spending the money and the loss of the two fish. Maybe it was just the long trip from CA but I lost all faith in it for the time being. I am keeping my options open but ....ya know how it is.

if you want b&w, get em. maroons mean you are up for a challenge... u may be rescuing a want-to-be male before she kills it.. you may have to try a FEW times to mate one. my maroon female only really liked tangs. she tolorated the rest of the tankmates, but just barely. you'll need a large anemone, she'll wiggle to death a tiny one.

And they are pretty darn dependent on anems so you might want to get one settled in before you get the maroon.

Id get another pair. I think they are beautiful. theres only 1 other kind id consider first and there super hard to find :( I cant remember the name, Im out of the loop :D

What about purchasing two of them that have already been sitting in a tank together in a display tank of a store? Depending on the length of time in it. I have a bubble tip doing great and feeding on a regular basis. Maroons look great and seem to have a lot of personality. Weighing my options.
Great write up too Tourkid

iffy. ask someone about them. I originally bought a 'pair' that were in the same tank at the store, one was a lil bitey towards the other but the other was submitting so i bought them.

I had to save the 'submitting' fish he nearly died. I had to qt him back to full health then returned him to the store.

I waited almost 6 months before i found the tinyest baby maroon id ever seen. thats the fish in my story, lil steve :D

if one is sugnifigantly smaller, and they are happy together (NO signs of meaness) you might b ok ! Find out how long they have been together too.

Up towards cleveland we have a couple members that have been raising clowns, one guy (discoreefrover) has about 80 onyx clowns that are around 2 weeks old. I just picked up an 8 week old pair of percs (from chuggy) for my 14g. In the pic you can see one to the right in front of the clear meshing (I had to put the meshing in so the clown didnt get sucked into the intake). The other one is already hosting the rbta, you can barely see him getting lost in the tentacles.

Just remembered, there is another local guy here (canton) that sells black osc from ora for $50 when he has them. I have a pair in my 120.

also on a note .. have a Black Occ pair and they are as mean as any Maroon clown I have ever owned my female drws blood every time im in the tank ...Just so you know there no tthat innocent...lol ...but I still love em !!!

Who may be that person from Canton if you don't mind? I went to sleep last night noticing that my bubble tip was getting ready to split. Iwould say he was about 1/3 of the way through and I wake up this morning to him in my Vortech. Happy Birthday to me.
Back on topic. We have an occelaris female that was originally in my 120 that would constantly bite at your hand when you were in the tank. Very nice clown pics Aerius
Decisions........

His name is pescado amigo, he is an ora dealer if I remember correctly. Also dont forget about disco and chuggy, I just think its cool to get them from local guys raising them.

If you guys werent so far north I'd be all over it. Those percs you picked up fromChuggy are nice from what I can see. And for one to already be head first in an anemone....how cool is that

Well if you change your mind its worth the drive, lots of good stores up this way you should make a day out of and not have to worry about having fish shipped.

There are indeed. I have been to Salty Critter and that is where I got my current pair of occelaris clowns now. Very nice store. Thanks to everyone for giving me some insight. Greatly appreciated.
