My girlfriend has been wanting a lagoon with sharks similar to the ones at CC. Does anyone know a good place to get those big blue tubs that they use there?
 
dammit jordan she saw that and now guess what i get to research.she is in the back saying really how hard could it be just build it . lol
 
if i were to use a pool does anyone have a link to a dependable build using an above ground pool for shark lagoon / mixed reef (if im doin the work i think i should enjoy it also).
 
Fiberglassing isn't as easy as you think. We do it for a living. People call us for advice so they can do it themselves to save money. 3-4 weeks later we get a call for a repair or to start over from scratch. You need to know the proper way to mix the chemicals and be able to work fast before you lose your batch. Be ready to itch like crazy, grinding it sucks, and you will get dirty.
 
Yeah, "be prepared to itch" is right! I've glassed and sanded a lot of boats and you will feel like peeling your skin off to keep from itching anymore. Best tip I ever used was to rub your exposed skin down with talc powder before sanding. The talc seals up the pores of your skin and keeps the glass from getting in. Still itchy, just not as bad. I'm scratching my arms just thinking about it :fun5:

Did you ever consider using pond liner. Not the thin stuff. Home depot has the thicker rubber liner. And then use landscaping bricks for the walls. I have seen above the ground ponds like this. Why not a lagoon?
 
fiberglass is a little tricky at 1st but its not hard i fiberglass custom car audio as a hobby all you need is some polyester and a few other things and bam its done im sure its a little more difficult then kick panels lol due to the amount of coats. Then after that apply some bondo if you want to smooth it out I use Rage Extreme
 
Out back or is this why you cleaned the garage? I would be concerned about a pond liner. Knowing you, there is no way this is just for her sharks. You'll be shooting for a million paly's. All the what ifs with a liner - UV exposure, effects of salt, rock slide, tree roots/branches, weed wackers... Repair could be a daunting task and you'd be stuck with what to do with a 3 foot Acan while the hole gets patched!
If you build indoor, that eliminates most of the above, but still need to know liner won't get brittle in time. Doubling up seems wise.
 
Willow got an inexpensive kiddie pool for around $150 from Wally World. It survived a summer of Day Care use/abuse. it was about 10-12 foot diameter with an external pump built in the cannister filter, PVC frame. Double up the liner and build up the sides and you could start cheap.
 
im thinking of doing it indoors or at least green housed for natural light. i also think the double liner sounds smart. any thoughts of doing starboard or such on the bottom compared to DSB incase of slides? You are most likely correct. i will let her believe for now that it is HER Shark lagoon then as i fill it i will explain to her the value and balance achieved by diversity.(time for my reef)
 
Starboard, egg crate or anything else that will prevent tears or holes, for sure. Corals will be an easy persuasion. Did you ever see my system that used a 180 reef to filter the 215 shark/eel tank? You just have to use lagoon and near shore species and things that are more tolerant of the PO4 and pollutants in general. Leathers, shrooms, palys, rics all went nuts. I even had an elegance growing like a weed until one sloppy day with the dkh...
