Shark Tank Again

If anything - the size of your returns sounds a bit too large for the size of your tank.

3/4" returns are too large? Why?

My Bad.

Sorry - I thought that you meant 3 - 4" returns, not 3/4" returns.

Still since - the returns are 3/4", then you should be fine with 3 or 4 return lines

I've seen a custom built 540 gallon shark tank with (3) 1" returns.

That may be true, and I appreciate all of your advice, but my belief is that you can never have too many return lines in a reef aquarium which is the alternate use for this aquarium. It will cost too much for this project to limit it to a shark tank only. I that does not work out I will want other options. The return lines are mostly for the success of lps/sps corals and not necessarily the fish alone.

Domboski - Do you have any actual pictures of your sharks? If so please post them up.

Here you go! I am not the best with the camera, sorry.

Marble Shark. Hides a lot. Here he is in his cave.

Here he is after he ripped up a silverside (the reason why you see particles in the water).

The first two pictures are Brown Banded Bamboo Sharks and the thrid picture is a Marble Cat Shark.

BTW they look great!

i dont really think thats gonna be ok for keeping a shark since sharks always require alot of space of swiming...

Depends on the type of shark.

Swimming sharks like - Requiems, bonnets, smooth hounds - True. They require lots of swimming room for their size.

Bottom-dwellers like bamboos, eppies, horns, and coral cats - Not true. These sharks can do quite well in most larger home aquariums (over 180 gallons) - as proof by the photos above.

As for Domobski's sharks

The Big Guy - I believe - we IDed it as an Arabian Bamboo.

The Birthday Shark - Brown banded Bamboo - no doubt.

The Marbled Shark - is a Coral Catshark(A. marmoratus) - again no doubt.

the Bonus Ray - I believe is a Yellow Stingray.

By the way - excellent sharks

Thanks guys! As krj-1168 mentioned, these are all bottom dwellers. They mostly hide out in the caves until night or feeding time (I sacrifice viewing time for happy sharks). I feed them a mixture of food to keep them happy (silversides, wild caught SW minnows, naked Gobies, grass shrimp, flounder, etc). When the small bamboo gets larger this tank will not be able to house all three anymore though. The good news is, I have a 400 gallon waiting for them! It is 8' long, 3 feet wide and 2' high. I have over 300lbs live rock and a custom made quad beckitt skimmer (a beast!). The tank is not as high as I would like but as mentioned earlier, sometimes sacrifices need to be made to make sure the sharks are happy.

Thanks again for the for the shark feedback and hopefully this thread helped out Mike D.

You're making broad generalizations. Do dasyatis kuhlii accept frozen foods more commonly than taeniura lymma? Yes, probably, but I never understood why people think the ribbontail ray is impossible or something. It isn't, if you actually try.

it's not only a generalization but a fact of life acknowledged by most shark/ray experts in the field of aquarium keeping.

a good analogy would be, what would be a better angelfish, a queen or a rock beauty? would you respond with

"a queen would accept food and thrive more commonly then a rock beauty but keeping a rock beauty isn't impossible if you try"

or

"a queen can live/thrive for decades in a home aquarium while a rock beauty will more than likely perish within a month".

same thing with the 2 blue spotted rays, that is not a generalization.

I am putting the order in for the aquarim this week. I have decided on 96x30x26. I think that it should be sufficient.
Mike D
I will try to keep you updated on the sharks, etc that I order for it.

Yeah - the tank should be okay for a couple of small sharks (like coral cats, or gray bamboos) or maybe a small ray.

by the way - clekchau - I sent a reply on the PM. hope you got it.

Those are the ones that I will most likely go with. My next pick was a great white. I was thinking that if it were a humble shark it would be okay with small living quarters.

I just joined here and i couldn't wait to read this thread. You guys have some amazing tanks! I use to keep a blue spot ribbon tail in my 210 but lost him due to the fact that i did not know that they were unable to tolerate tap water. I have heard of people keeping them but ihear that they are very hard to keep as well.

personally - I'm glad Megalodons are extinct.

Just the thought of 40-50 ft shark with 5-7" teeth , and capable of eating whales is scary.

And forget keeping them in a 6 million gallon tank

Wonderful tooth. Nice frame

Especially for an oversized mackeral shark. ;)

Yeah, Megs were likely very awesome sharks.

But the largest predatory shark that ever live was killed off by combination of Ice Ages, and the modern Great White Shark.
