Sharks and Magnets

Will magnets in my tank affect my sharks? I have a magfloat glass cleaner, magnetic power heads and three magnetic breeders nets.

Depends on the species of shark and the size of the magnet.
Yes, magnets can mess with the sharks ability to navigate.

These are the sharks I am going to do my breeding program with. I am going to breed the first few generations in the shack before moving them into the pond. I leased the pond to the islands conservancy and got 2, 500 for the initial set up. i will send you picture s.

A glass tank big enough to allow breeding groups isn't going to be the best way to approach it (for cost or care). I'd suggest something like a fiberglass above ground bin/pool or something like a free standing soft sided plastic pool.

Look into:
Red-Ewald fiberglass pools: www.redewald.com
Intex above ground pools: www.intexcorp.com

You can also talk to the guys at Aquatic Eco Systems. I buy a lot of holding pools and large scale filtration / life support systems from them as a package deal. They'll be able to set you up with chillers as well.

Right now they are in pools except the horn sharks, they are in a 180 gallon. I got it as a package deal shark and tank, it's a pain to get things on the island so some hige fiber glass tank won't work. I was thinking three large cement pit with drylock.

So everything is going great. My uncle is on the conservation board of directors and is trying to get decomissioned military boats, planes or helicopters and make it a historic site. This will allow me to tap into more of the money our government loves to give away.

This guy is everything I hate about our government...

This project will save the children, help prevent the effects of global warming and put jobs out there. It's an investment which will save the environment and the children.

All jokes aside this guy is in California what do you expect?

Using equipment like that might pose a great risk to fish health due to contamination possiblities.

If done the right way it will be fine right? Have all the fluids drained, wired removed and metal coated. I only ask because the quarries by me have helicopters, statues and other stuff down there.

Yes.

With a large enough body of water, man made structures are great. The trick is making sure you aren't just sinking random stuff that will kill off the animals in the area.

I can across this and it reminded me of this thread. I didn't change any of the letters in the title. The news site published it with the capital letters like that.

A lure for divers: Fighter jets as artificial reef

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Two gutted fighter jets are now at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico off Panama City Beach as part of an artificial reef meant to attract divers and fishermen.

The retired F101 Voodoo fighter jets, sunk Friday, were previously on display at a downtown marina and local college.

Officials and local divers say the jets should lure reef fish including red snapper and will be interesting for even inexperienced divers because they aren't too deep. Dive shop owner Patrick Green says that at 76 feet, the jets make for a perfect, nonchallenging dive.

Boaters gathered to watch the sinking, honking and cheering as the jets were lifted off a barge and suspended above the water before sinking.

Officials also sunk prefabricated concrete reef modules to help attract marine life.

This is a great example. I wish they had gone into more detail.
When using old equipment like this, they go through an extensive cleaning/stripping process to make sure they won't damage the surrounding environment.

The build is coming along great. The conservation section is 172,800 sq ft. The underwater divider is set up and a survey of the life in the conservation area has taken place. Next is to find boats, jetskis and helicopters to sink, figure out how I want to stock it and build a few canals so have more water move between the conservation section and the rest of the area. There is a great episode on Whale Wars that teaches you how to sink objects in the water. I will keep everyone updated as I progress.

Magnets shouldn't upset them. The Mythbusters tested that with some strong magnets, and the sharks didn't seem bothered.

Artificial reef are done by biologist around here in bay county and have stricked rules on what and how they use something.
