Should have read the FAQ?

Just read that ultimately I must remove all but two of my clowns. The store told me to buy six to eight for my 150g tank. Bought six but after reading this faq section, which I know I should have done first, I wonder if they know what they are doing there or are just interested in moving stock.

just interested in moving stock.

Or, they don't know how to stock clowns. Probably both.

Welcome to Reef Central!

Ouch, yeah, somebody really gave you bad advice there. Good for you researching, even after the fact. Double good for you, following the advice you found in your research. ;)

Well...in defense of the LFS, Clowns will form a harem in the wild, but it generally doesn't work out in the aquarium.

Percula but not the true variety.BTW I went back tonight to witness the Shark frenzy feeding at 7:00 and to share my new found knowledge. The guy stands by his advice but is willing to take back the fish. Says with a 150 tank six is no problem because they are young, farm raised, and get along? Told me I had ROOM FOR LOTS MORE FISH. Oh well I think I will seek out advice here. He showed me fish that I knew would be a problem with a reef tank and when I corrected him he said I didnt tell him I wanted to have a reef tank so he only was showing me fish that got along with clowns. Triggers and Butterflies...hmmmm

Hey there.

Gotta be in Edmonton? And i know exactly where you went for the fish:(
And yes do not listen to them again. They will spill out all this garbage as they want the sale. Not all lfs are like this but this particular one is. If you want to send me a pm i will give you some great stores to deal with who won't give you bad advice:)

If they are small and unsexed, and being ocellaris, they may just group for you. I know it's been done, and have considered trying it myself. The female and male will "rise" to the top, with all the other clowns remaining unsexed. If you read Wilkerson's book, she mentions keeping four o's together in this manner.

There will be some fighting at first, but in the end it may just work. Besides, you could always pull the other ones out at a later date if it doesn't work.

So your lfs may know a little more than you thought. ;)

i love the conflicting advice on this site

Actually if you read the FAQ you will find that is it not. In the FAQ I clearly write that while it maybe possible and certainly is in the wild, it is not recommended in a tank, because there is no escape for out casts, where there is in the wild.

Personally I am still in the camp of sooner or later there will be problems with more than two. But sooner or later for fish that can live upwards of 45 years, may not be on a scale that we can prove or disprove on RC...

Actually I have seen it done. My wife works for a dr.s office that a LFS takes care of their tank and they have 4 pairs of false percs in the tank along with a Large Maroon clown. The also have two small juv. male percs that wander the tank. The Maroon keeps close to her huge leather that she is hosting in and the 4 pairs have their own corners of the tank. The way the tank is set up may help a bit too. It is set up to view on all 4 sides (tank is the island in the waiting room) with a center overflow. Not to mention the tank is about 250-300 gallons.

So, it can be done

Keeping multiple pairs and species in the same tank are completely different topics. This is about keeping a group of the same clowns together. Just don't want to confuse the issue.

Btw, GO BEARS!!!!
