Ok im cooking rocks that had many aptasia growing on it..... my question is can i add joes juice or some other chemical designed to kill aptasias to the cooking water??? will it harm the rock if i use large amounts?? and will it even kill the aptasia

how bad is the aptasia? If it is bad Joes Juice will not be enough. Joe's Juice is high concentrated kalkwasser (lime water). Aptaisia is a natural diet of the copperband butterfly which will eat the aptasia but I would not add him to the vat that the rock is cooking in until the rock cycles or the copperband is a for sure gonner.

You've got to take the rock out [one at a time] and give it a good dose of Joe's Juice right where you know the aiptasia is. You may need to set up a small saltwater tank so you can see where the little suckers are. Good luck.

Alternatively, you can get a raft of peppermint shrimp once you get the rock into your tank---they'll at least eat the babies.

pepperment shrimp IMO are hit or miss. If it is really bad copperband is the only way to go IMO. Did you get the rock from a LPS? For what it is work I would probally dry it all out, let everything die off, then re-seed it with some aptasia free live rock.

i got it from some local reefer that let his tank go to hell so he sold me about 200 lbs of rock for dirt cheap how long will the reseeding take and how long do u suggest i let the rock dry out and will the crap ever come back if it dried

let it dry out for two weeks to be safe, then cycle the rock for a few weeks, then re-seed it with clean live rock and things should be live again in 6-12 months. This hobby requires alot of patiences. Since it came from a fellow reefer and he gave you a great deal, I would dry it out.

Aiptasia isnt THAT hard to get rid of, cook the rock, get some peppermint shrimp, stock up on joes juice and stay on top of it. Id rather fight aptasia for three months than have to start from scratch with base rock that used to be at least "ok" live rock.

Going to need and army of peppermint shrimp at $9 bucks a piece give or take and multiple bottles of joes juice at $7 bucks. So to get rid of it all you are looking at $100 plus bucks and if that works at all.

I also have a lot of rocks in my display getting full of it because joe's juice and kalk paste didn't work. A copperband butterfly wouldn't last long in my tank with the 2 tangs  I am going to try the peppermint shrimp too.

my copperband has faired well with my hippo and yellow tang and the yellow tang is a mean mother who tries to cut you open when you put your hand in the tank.

Aiptasia can survive a very long time. I might try adding some Berghia or similar nudibranch, but Aiptasia control is more of a long-term effort, in general.
