should I make a wet dry or buy one

I was thinking of buying a wet dry filter system. A friend told me I could make one alot cheaper. Get a 10 gallon tank for the sump. A overflow box and a power head to move to water. I was wondering If this is a better way to go. Has anyone made one. Also what do you think making one would cost for a 55gal tank

Why make a wet/dry? Any reason in particular?

Do some searches for sumps in the Do It Yourself section and you'll find a lot of examples of what you want to do there. Wet/Dry trickle filter may not be the term you really want to use for describing what you want to do.
