I think you need to take a few steps back with your tank.
Dont be so discouraging...
JMAREEF1022, First as mentioned I would check water quality for yourself, your LFS may or may not have good quality test kits, like Hanna, or Salifert for example... See exactly what they are using (albeit API or something).
Look specifically at your Nitrate levels and Phosphate levels to see why we don't have defined color in the tank. High nutrient levels can affect coral growth and coloration. Limiting these nutrients in one form or another will help you with your growth/color/happy coral problem.
If your water quality is stable and within appropriate parameters, then we would turn to lighting. MH lighting is strong, it is possible however that it may not be providing enough PAR*(photosynthetic available radiation) for the corals, which can also cause them to brown out or stop growing.
SPS corals are very demanding of these two mentioned aquarium parameters (water quality and lighting), water movement is another heavy requirement, however I myself am not so sure of it causing coral browning, reduction is growth though, yes.
