Should I take out the sand

breutus

Don't ask me, I'm wrong.
Okay not to long ago I set up my first sump. I don't know why but I was under the impression that there should be sand in the sump. So in the refuguim area I put about six inches of sand, the whole dimensions of the sand is about 13wx14dx6h but after seeing several people's sumps nobody seems to have sand in there sump! So should I take it out, does it not do anything for me in that small of an area?

The biggest reason I am asking is if I take the sand out I would be able to change the baffle system around and probably get rid of my bubble problem.

Thanks guys!
Thats kinda what I was thinking, but somebody had said once that a DSB doesn't do anything under a certain amount of sand?

So for now it stays, at least until I hear compelling reasons to take it out. Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of my bubbles

4-6" with it better closer to 6" is adequate. Especially if it's oolitic sized particles (maybe even less). If they are larger I'd do 6" for sure if you want it to function well.

oh it's six at the lowest spot for sure, i thought i remembered somebody on here saying once that unless you have a DSB in a tank larger than 40 gallons it does nothing. something about it's not enough area to make any difference? IDK. but I am in agreeance with you doc I think it should do something.

I told you to do 6" as doc always says 6" for a DSB and I always listen to doc. He knows what he's talking about :D

I think I could give you a run for your money with simpsons... though it helps that I just saw that episode like two or three weeks ago.

We really need to get together this week and take care of those boards!
