Should I trust Seachem's Purigen?

How clear is your water attml? Sparkling clear? How long did it take for the purigen to turn brown?

Between the Rowaphos and the Purigen my water is pretty clear. I recharged it after about a month and a half. It had turned a light brown so I decided to follow the instructions and recharge it. I just soaked it in bleach for 24 hours, stirring it up occasionaly, and then let it soak in dechlorinator water per the instructions.

I have never seen phosban before but I can almost guarantee it is smaller. These purigen particles are tiny.

Joe, what is your reasoning behind using the Purigen? Water clarity?

I guess I'm just curious as to why you're even bothering with it since you're already utilizing an ozonizer...

hmm...just found this thread. i was curious about using purigen w/ sps and started a thread today. i searched about 8 pages to find this one.

anyone run into any problems usign it??? bleaching etc?

anyone use it to get rid of bryopsis...i heard it will bleach it out so it dies

I ran into no problems when I used it for 9 months or so. Been too lazy to recharge of late, no issue with discontiniuing it [irregular use].

I run it in a reactor. The grain size is very small so a low flow is required. I use an old TWP and the same pump a mini 404 from the phosban reactor. I put a "T" just before the ball valve on the phosban reactor and the back preasure it causes and the smaller tube size provides just enough flow to go through the TWP and purigen just tumbles...... it works well and been using it for over a year.

Thanks for this great thread, guys. I've used it in an old Soft/LPS and a Discus tank and had GREAT results with water clarity. Was hoping it wouldn't cause problems in an SPS tank!

If you think you need carbon(some don't use it). Purigen and carbon are pretty unrelated in what they do.

On a side note I've used Purigen for a 1.5 year and am very happy with the stuff. You think its impressive in a clean reef. I tired it in my Midas cichlids tank (60ppm nitrate) and it turned brown in 3 days.

The best place I've found to put it is on the output from the skimmer. It seem to turn brown the fastest there. The thinking that the leftover protein loaded micro bubbles are pasted thru it.

I've had the same 2 bags the whole time and they still work too.
