Should I try another anemone?

I had an anemone for only a few weeks (bulb tip). My true percula clown never even went in it, the anemone went to the back and thats where it ended up, then it ended up in the trash after the few weeks. When should I try another anemone (or should I at all?) I like the clowns going in them, it looks really cool. The tank is around 3 months old, so it might have been to early? Which anemone would you pick for a true percula clown, or should I not waste money on another one? Thanks! :D
 
If you get another one and it wonders, you will still need to make sure it gets fed, especially since the clown is not hosting or feeding it. I personally believe in target feeding my anemones, I have a Condy, a Flower, an Super Orange Flower and a Green Carpet, most of which I have had for over a year. Just make sure you have a turkey baster handy, chopped shrimp, fish, krill, anything just make sure food gets to it weekly or bi-weekly. Also have to make sure the light is getting to it, as well as good flow. If they hide in the back and you keep them healthy enough, they may move back to the front. Good luck.
 
Would you get a magnifica? I have a true percula and that anemone thread, it doesn't even have a percula listed for a BTA. Magnificas are cool but really hard to keep right? What one should I go with, and when. Tank is around 3 months old.
 
hold off on the anemone for at least 9 more months... you really need a stable tank for them to be happy... and considering your experience with anemone's i wouldnt get anything other than a BTA...

Don't even consider a H. Magnifica at this point if you havn't had success with the more forgiving anemones such as BTAs. I would give it another 8-9 months before you get another anemone. Anemones need established tanks.
 
I notice too that you didn't list what your setup is - you need to make sure your lighting is strong enough - BTAs need less light that the other commonly kept anemones (flower's and aptiasias aside:) - just kidding about the aptasias!! Flow too is very important. But along with lighting and flow, you need to make sure you're tank is stable, which only time brings!
 
My water quality stayed the same for basically since I set it up. So with that, it may be considered stable but I don't know why the other one kicked. I got it home, set him on a high rock (BTA). The lights are T5 nova extreme 2 10k daylight and 2 460nm actinics, maybe it was too much light. He did move to the back of my tank and thats where it stayed. After the few weeks, he did come out to the front and was on a top rock. It looked so nice, he was really open too. Then it moved to the back once again, got near a filter, it was being sucked in a bit so I left the filter off a while. Then turned it on because I needed some filtration in there (I was basically just on and off plugging and unplugging the filter so the anemone didn't get sucked in through the slots on the filter) and then he was a few inches away I think and then I turned it on, maybe went to eat I think, came back and he was in there a bit where his mouth was being stretched, and then he went on the sand foot facing upward. That may have done him in. He may have survived if it wasn't for that filter?
Oh ya, if I would get another BTA in a few months, do any of you guys have perculas that go in a BTA? On that thread, percula isn't listed to go in BTA.
 
Yes, true perculas will host in them. Mine jump back and forth between two right now. :)However, IMHO I would wait with the anemone until you get more experience keeping other "corals" under your belt. You'll save not only a lot of $ but prevent unecessary deaths. What others said is true...your tank most likely needs more time to mature.

Clowns don't technically need anemones to do well and often will host in things that look nothing like anemones. If you want something that looks more like an anemone though...and is "easier" to keep...look into toadstools. Some get huge but clowns will also take to them:

If and when you do decide to get an anemone I would stick with BTA clones for a while. :)
Even months is not really a good indication of a success when it comes to anemones. As far as I know their cells do not die...they can technically live forever in the wild and death in the aquarium is most likely attributable to inadequate husbandry.

You'll also need to pick up some test kits for at least Ca and Alkalinity. Many people also test for Mg. This is in addition to ammonia, nitrates, pH and phosphates.
 
I had a BTA and my false percula never took to it, But my domino damsel did move in (after a month) only at night. I bought a saddleback not to long ago and after a week it kicked the damsel out and he moved in for good. JUST BECAUSE YOU AD AN ANEMONE DOESNT MEAN A CLOWN ISNT JUST GOING TO JUMP RIGHT INTO IT. And also mine is in the back of my tank aswell.

Yep, I have all of those because I have a mixxed reef. I will wait till sometime next year to get an anemone though. Thanks for the help! I would also like to stick another true percula in there so theres two of them, get the anemone at the same time to make sure this one actually goes in it.
 
Another plus with toadstools is that they don't move. That actually comes in handy. :lmao: Whichever way you go, good luck! :thumbsup:
